Monster Culture

The article talks about how most monsters are individuals who are just like us who are the ones we consider as monsters. We can see this in the movie because people all around us such as our neighbors, our friends, and our family all participate in the purge, we don't think of them as monsters or deviants but that's what they do during these 12 hours. Most people are scared of the purge because of the violence that ensues and what can/could happen but others are intrigued by this violence and want to experience it for themselves and feel the emotions that come from this event. It also talks about how most monsters aren't ones we would normally recognize, the people who participate in the purge are people we wouldn't normally assume as the killer type or deviant type.

Deviance

There is deviance from the moment the movie starts until the end. Most people go out and commit crimes throughout the 12 hours in which crime is legal but some people also just stay inside. We could consider that people who commit crimes are deviant because it is not normal but then we can consider the people who don't partake in the purge as deviant because they aren't doing what everyone else is doing during the purge. There are also people who travel to the U.S. just for the 12 hours to participate in the purge and they can be considered deviant.

Stigma

There is a stigma in the movie that everyone who participates in the purge is a criminal and in most cases we would identify them as criminals and they would have the stigma associated with criminals but in this case, we don't stigmatize them because all crimes are considered legal and also most people do it to protect themselves as well. I would also like to look at the stigma of racist and racism in the movie, there is a white terrorist group that gets together and targets colored people.

Differential Association

I would like to connect the 6th proposition of differential association to the purge because there is an excess of favorable definitions of deviant behavior over unfavorable ones. In the instance of the purge, the favorable definition of deviant behavior is "kill or be killed" In the purge, if you don't protect yourself there is a high likelihood that you will be killed or injured in the event. Most people would rather kill someone else rather than dying themselves which is an example of favorable vs unfavorable. Another propostion to look at is the 3rd propistion that deviance is learned in intimate groups, most of the people who participate in the purge operate in groups of their friends or family whom they are close to.

Concepualization of Deviance

Critical Conception of deviance: the normative understanding of deviance is established by those in power. An example of this is how the president and the people around them are responsible for the purge happening and the deviance that this allows. In the movie, we see Senator Charlie who is running for president with the promise that she would end the purge which would put a stop to the deviance. The purpose of the purge is for the government to let people unleash their anger for 12 hours and then it leads to them being better citizens throughout the rest of the year.
