My role at the ISC - Subject Leader for STEM

About me - I have been teaching computer science at all levels for the last 10 years and I have been with the ISC since 2019. Prior to working in education I had a long career in video games development as a programmer and Director of Development for a large publisher. Working in games development I had the opportunity to work all over the world including commuting to Melbourne once a month for about 12 months! I had quite a varied academic background after college studying religion, philosophy, computer science and mathematics!

What I like about working at the ISC - I really enjoy working in the ISC, I find computer science is constantly interesting and there is always something new to learn even after being involved in software development since 1990! The students we have are always good to work with and it's fascinating working with people from a wide variety of countries and different educational approaches!

My piece of advice to students - My advice to students is try to find an enthusiasm for your subject (or study something you are deeply interested in), if you can make your degree subject something you are genuinely passionate about it will make a huge difference to your studies and will greatly increase your chance of future success!

Fun fact about myself - The famous Scottish poet James Hogg is in my family tree as is Buffalo Bill Cody!

Anything else? I look forward to welcoming future students into the STEM department at the ISC and there's always something new that you can teach us!

My role at the ISC - Tutor of Mathematics

About me - I am Greek and I obtained a BSc in Physics and MSc in Astronomy from University of Sussex, long time ago. In UK, I discovered a new beautiful world which I felt in love with.
I returned to my country after my studies, but my life dream was to come back to UoS and lovely Brighton. After marriage and two kids, life did me the favour and I got the opportunity to finally return to the UK.
I have always been a teacher and a student at the same time, so I obtained Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy, DTLLS and PGCE. I am currently doing my PhD in Informatics at UoS and I am creating an immersive RPG game for maths.

What I like about working at the ISC - Apart from the fact that ISC is located in UoS, my dream destination, I love working with ISC. I feel like I belong as we treat each other as family. There are easy and hard times, as in every family, but we love and care for each other. This is the most important aspect for me because it helps overcome any obstacle.

My piece of advice to students - I was a foreign student too, as I a Greek living in a UK environment, so I am very familiar with the struggles, worries, cultural and language issues that you may face at the start. My advice is give it time, and most importantly believe in yourself. My belief is that the teacher's role is to boost students' confidence. That's all! If a teacher succeeds in this then the students can do all the rest.

Fun fact about myself - I am a passionate and dedicated online gamer for many years. I am playing Lord of the Rings Online, Elder Scrolls Online, Star Trek Online and many other small games. Every single night! I am also a Tolkien fan, to the point that my house is decorated as Middle Earth.

Anything else? You are not alone. We are here to help. All you have to do is ask.

My role at the ISC - Subject Lead in STEM

About me - I have been teaching at Sussex ISC since 2018, first as Subject Lead for Psychology and most recently for Life Sciences too. I have an undergraduate honours degree in Physiology and Pharmacology, and completed my doctorate in Experimental Psychology right here at Sussex University. I worked as a Psychology researcher in several laboratories investigating learning, memory and addiction behaviour before starting my journey into teaching.

What I like about working at the ISC - The students! I love teaching Psychology and I'm really passionate about science. I get to spend my days talking about topics that fascinate me, with like-minded people who are interested too. My experience of ISC students is that they are enthusiastic, motivated and fun to teach - and they always have a few things to teach me too!

My piece of advice to students - Always, always, always ask for help when you need it - and sometimes even if you don't think you need it! Your tutors are there to help and support you, and all we want is to see you do well in your studies. So talk to us about your assignments, about topics you don't understand or even topics you just want to know more about. Talk to us about the feedback we give you; our comments are there to make sure you excel in the next assignment. Most importantly, talk to us about how we can support you to do your absolute best and achieve all of your goals.

Fun fact about myself - When I'm not in the classroom, I like to be on the stage. I'm a singer and musical theatre performer in my free time. I've taken part in countless shows, including Hair, West Side Story, Sweeney Todd, Shrek the Musical, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang... I could go on! I just love the thrill of live theatre and the camaraderie it builds with your fellow performers, there's nothing like it!

My role at the ISC-Subject Leader – Finance and Accounting

About me: - I have been teaching at the ISC since 2016 and as the Subject Leader for Finance and Accounting, I look after all the accounting and finance module provisions offered by the International Study Centre at the University of Sussex. The modules are studied by Foundation in Business Management students, IY1 Business and Management students, IY1 Accounting and Finance students, and Pre-Masters students. I came to the ISC following a long and successful teaching career in Secondary schools and further education colleges in Zimbabwe, United Kingdom, and Guernsey.

What I like about working at the ISC: -

The ISC brings together students from a diverse range of countries which renders it the unique characteristic of being a melting pot of cultures, languages, attitudes to learning, ideocracies, and ambitions. As a result of the diversity, I find the ISC as an intriguing place to work. I derive great pleasure in learning from the students and using that knowledge to guide students to achieve their goals. The Sussex ISC provides students with great opportunities to develop the skills they need to succeed academically and prepare for the future world of work, business, politics, and social life. I am extremely proud to be part of the team at Sussex ISC which work well with students, assisting them to gain the best experience they can have in UK higher education.

My piece of advice: -

One of the best ways of learning a language is to learn to think in that language, so if you want to learn English quickly, learn to think in English.

Fun fact about me: -

I have played and coached basketball and before relocating to the UK, I was the Under 20 Girls national team coach for Zimbabwe, and Assistant Coach to the senior team. Now I have taken up officiating at swimming galas because my children are competitive swimmers. I also like long distance running and runs 20 km at least 3 times a week.

Anything else: -
I have an interest in reading on how international students in a variety of UK Higher Education environments engage with their learning with an emphasis on accounting and finance. I find this extremely important in developing teaching and learning strategies that enhance student participation, engagement, and learning to lead to positive experiences during their time at the ISC-Sussex.
