The Louisiana Purchase was a deal France made with the United States. They sold the United States a BIG chunk of land for 15 million. Seems like alot Right???? To us yes but France gave the United States 828,000 Square Miles, and Alaska was 7.2 million. Yet Alaska is only 663,300 Square Miles! It would take to Alaska to have more Square Miles than Louisiana, but it would cost less being only 14.4 million. France basically gave us free land!

During this time President Thomas Jefferson asked Meriwether Lewis to go explore the new land with William Clark. They started the expedition in May 21, 1804. People were cheering for them as they left in 3 small ships called the Corps of Discovery. They sailed down the Ohio River where they would have reached a tough terrain due to a lack of maps. They would meet Native American tribes for the first time. Seeing the Native Americans were dangerous assumed they were bad people. So the Corps of Discovery had to gift them with fish hooks, knives, and blankets to befriend them.
