Civil War

I thought this was a good event to portray fashion for women during this time. I felt like our group could elaborate on this more because we have already learned about the civil war and how women were in this time. We can find many research on fashion during this time because there was a lot going on. For example, a lot of women became caretakers or nurses for the men who fought during the war. Many women made outfits that were good for nurses to work in. Another style was the outfits to disguise themselves in the war. Also, women wore Victorian style dresses because it was popular during time. Since the U.S. was growing in industry, more products were being produced. One big product was cotton which was a big ingredient for making clothes. For all of these reasons, I think the Civil War is a good event where womens fashion was trending.

Amelia Bloomer

I think Amelia Bloomer is a great example to display fashion for women during this time because she is the first female to create this idea of women wearing trousers. Bloomers are linked to women’s rights because this is the first outbreak of women not being told what to wear or how to dress. Bloomers are ankle-length trousers—the large Turkish style or straight-legged "pantaloons"—worn with a mid-calf-length dress. The Bloomer Costume appears in Amelia’s newspaper (The Lily), which gets the word out about women being able to wear pants; this was seen as preposterous because only men wore pants. By women wearing pants, it allowed them to work easier in their read-to-wear outfits so their outfits would not get stuck in the machinery or ripped from doing manual labor. Her paper was published from 1849 to 1853.

Harper's Bazaar:

I believe that the creation of Harper’s Bazaar best displays women’s fashion in 1861-1900. The magazine was a guide to the everyday woman in the 19th century. Bazaar influenced fashion choices and invented new ways of women’s expression through clothing. The magazine redefined fashion and displayed fashion as an art form. Harper's Bazaar was, at the time period, an advocate for new ideas and styles for women in America. The magazine was a strong voice that united women together with similar admirations to fashion. This voice, that the magazine gave, was needed in this time period, because women were seen as second class citizens and looked down upon. Harper’s Bazaar was a safe place for women because the magazine empowered women and respected their acquired taste. After the Industrial Revolution, women yearned for something new and European. So forth, Harper's Bazaar gave women an insight to fashion all over the world and connected women from everywhere. Harper’s Bazaar was a major influence of fashion today and still prominent; fashion could not be where it is today without the magazine’s existence.

Industrial Revolution

Throughout the decades in the first semester design cycle, the industrial revolution helped build womens fashion to what it is today. One reason was because the Sewing machine and spinning jenny were invented. These inventions allowed women to make clothithing at a much faster pace than before, and created many new materials such as, wool, cotton, silk, and linen. As clothing production started to hasten, many women got jobs in textile factories as seamstresses. Women’s clothing had to change due to the work conditions of the factories. Women had to wear more casual clothes to fit in the crowded workspaces compared to their large gowns. Through the industrial revolution, women became a key role in the workforce, which changed their fashion dramatically.

American Revolution

At the beginning of the American Revolution, women wore gowns and petticoat worn over a second hooped petticoat which kept the skirt out. In addition, women’s waist retained long waist shape with a corset. During the duration of the American Revolution hoops and panniers became less common. Women’s clothing became less modest and neck and shoulders were left bare, which was really uncommon at the time. Women started to wear a more modern dress which paved the way to a more common outfit.
