In the chapter of The Man I Killed the solders lay low waiting for NVA solders to come through the trail as one enemy solder walks by and gets killed Kiowa comforts his friend when he kills the enemy
"I'll tell you the straight truth," he said. "The guy was dead the second he stepped on the trail. Understand me? We all had him zeroed." (The Man I Killed.(129) this shows a deeper meaning of just him wanting is friends to be okay it shows that he wants to help his friend to understand that they are in war and to understand mentally so that we doesn't suffer about it later on

During the Chapter The Lives Of the Dead the platoon arrives to a village after it had been napalmed the platoon starts to play with the bodies of the dead except Tim O'brine and the team start to tease him about not join in on it and and at the end of the day Kiowa tells Tim "You did a good thing today," .. "That shaking hands crap, it isn't decent. The guys'll hassle you for a while—especially Jensen—but just keep saying no. Should've done it myself. Takes guts, I know that." (The Lives of the Dead.(227) n this shows that Kiowa is well aware of his friends and team members feelings and experiences and to have an understanding of showing them real emotions is a brave thing to do.

A defining moment was when the had entered a church where two lived monks and the men had sent up camp camp at the old abandon church and Kiowa thinks its wrong to set up there "Its bad news,"[Kiowa] said. You don't mess with churches" (Church. 119) after wards Kiowa and Henry dobbins ho back and forth about religion and setting up in a monastery although this shows different side of Kiowa that is religious and see a different perspective on things then the other soldiers and the ability to cope with situations much more easier.
