After the fall of Rome, the Italian Peninsula was divided into a lot of independent states. The only independent state was the Kingdom of Sardinia also known as the piedmont in the Northwest. French troops were sent to Rome to reinstate the pope, they stayed there for a little bit of time. This was the first Italian war of independence, even though it was a failure it demonstrated that the new king would lead the unification movement. Victor Emanual and the kingdom of Italy were proclaimed in 1861. Italy would go on to create its own Empire.

The movement of Young Italy was founded by Giuseppe Mazzini in 1831. The Italian unification was effectively accomplished by the Prime Minister King Victor Emmanuel II also being aided by French Emperor Napoleon III. Giuseppe Mazzini thought that the goal of unification could be accomplished only if led by one of the Italian states. In 1848 to 1849 Giuseppe Mazzini participated in the First War of Itailan Independence against Austria. Mazzini and Italy activists had strong feelings towards making Italy into a democratic republic but now a parliamentary monarchy as the latter intended.
