Redemption was a movement in the South during Reconstruction in which white democrats overthrew the Radical Republican governments that had been established post Civil War. Their intent was to establish the "Old South" of white supremacy and black suppression. This period was significant in wreaking social and civil havoc and reinstating the hate and violence of the pre-Civil War south.
