CYA's Ideal Graduate by Cindy Martin

Imagine your ideal graduate:

What does your ideal graduate know about themselves as learners or learning in general?
What are the things they can do? What knowledge, skills, or dispositions do they have?
What does your ideal graduate care about? Be as descriptive as possible and consider HOW we can help to grow students into becoming this "ideal graduate". The sum of students' experiences from K - 12th grade determines whether or not he/she will become an ideal graduate. Moreover, the answers to these questions will help you on your journey to develop an authentic project for students in your respective grade level.

The ideal graduate is one that acknowledges that he/she is a life long learner that seeks to give and in-turn receive from the environment in which they live.
They understand the importance of finding a balance: not giving too much of themselves and not taking too much for themselves. The post graduate path that they choose will foster their desire to find the best career/occupation for them to grow as a person and become a productive member of society.

Growth Mindset
The ideal graduate has certainly had his/her share of struggles. Such struggles have likely left more questions than answers for him or her, but they have better understanding of what it means to have perseverance, passion, and purpose as a result. Although they know that not all situations and experiences will be ideal, they also have developed respect for learning from negative experiences and using them to their advantage.

The ideal graduate is able to complete daily work task by using resources around them to learn. They are able to think critically, solve problems, research, and communicate ideas via written or oral expression. They are open to learning new concepts and seek to stay current in their fields of interest. They are self motivated and have a natural curiosity about life. They care about the world around them, therefore they have a willingness to ask questions. They seek fairness, equality, and are aware of how their actions and lifestyle impacts others. Above all their ability to think critically equips them to solve the problems facing the world.

Educators can foster this in students by creating a space where students work collaboratively. This collaborative work should include multiple step questions that are open ended. Teachers have a duty to share knowledge without personal opinion about other cultures within the world. They also have a duty to display empathy and understanding to those who are different from themselves, as students will learn from their model. Students should be allowed to express themselves with a variety of tools not just through traditional paper pencil methods. Teachers have a obligation to expose students to life outside their community. Teachers can also foster the ideal graduate by having a open mind to new ideas and becoming a model of what life long learning looks like.

The idea graduate should also be flexible. As we've witnessed in the past year, things can change and quickly. It is important that our graduates are flexible in their plans and outlook on life. Sometimes, life throws us a curveball and we have to still be willing and able to hit the ball, risk striking out, or at least the very least giving it a bunt. They also must understand that once in a while it is totally fine, to do absolutely nothing and wait for the "right" thing to do or needs to be done (no matter how difficult.
