Equity on Global Warming

In the terms of the issue of global warming, the group that has spoken out against climate change is not one concentrated grouping, but rather a series of environmental activists as well as scientists, protesting and fighting for not just humans, (well primarily humans), but for the living things in general, for the right to have clean air, healthy lives, as well as safety from dangers in the form of chlorofluorocarbons, carbon dioxide, and other pollutants that are allowed to exist within the very atmosphere that shields us from rubble and debris from space, and more importantly, is responsible for helping provide the oxygen we breathe, while maintaining a balance of the gases that reside and are a part of it. Primarily, the group that is protesting against the injustice are activists as stated earlier, protesting that the use of pollutants and other harmful substance should be limited or quite bluntly, not use in any terms at all, and is not fair to the Earth and its inhabitants. The lack of energy as well expenses focused upon ended global warming by the majority of people that have influential power is another cause for protestation, viewed upon as negligence or even carelessness of what damage is being wrought upon our long-suffering planet. The equity in this situation is rebuked not by any outside force that would prevent us from doing the best we can to stop climate change , but rather a more effective one, ourselves. The only thing that is completely stopping us from ending climate change is us.

Major Turning Point on Global Warming

Although there are several turning points that are not only relevant to the cause but influence the outcome to some degree, one of the largest and most effective turning points, one that has left its mark quite clearly on the fight against climate change, is the Kyoto Protocol, which advanced and added onto the previous UNFCCC, or The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The UNFCCC was addressed in Rio de Janeiro from June 4th to the 13th as an international treaty in 1992, but was directly enforced two year later. In 1997, the Kyoto Protocol established fully legal bindings for well-developed countries to reduce all greenhouse gas emissions between the time period of 2008-2012. After a first period of commitment, the countries in agreement reduced levels by 5% facing 1990 levels previously, while the second stage of commitment is still currently in effect, with the agreement to lower levels by nearly 18%. The Kyoto Protocol central purposes to help the countries adapt to the effects of climate change as well as to direct them into lowering emissions, and eventually the present danger. Three means of helping the countries meet the goal includes International Emissions Trading (allowing countries to sell excess emissions), Clean Development Mechanism (allows countries to implement a emission-reduction project on developing countries), and finally Joint Implementation, (allows a country to earn emission-reduction units from other projects. The reason the Kyoto Project is considered such a large turning point is because it allows several countries to work in collaboration in effective and usually cost-effective ways, building unity through the means of saving the planet from dire consequences. The levels of pollutants in the atmosphere has decreased, however the problem still persists, but eventually with some hope, effort, communication, and above all unity, humans can adapt as they have always done, from primitive people to our current selves, evolving and adapting to solutions to fix a problem, whether it was finding food, shelter, water, and overcome obstacles, persisting until the very end. The will to live has kept living organisms alive and has remained greatly unchanged, directing us and allowing ourselves to grow as individuals and above all, survive, even in tough situations.

Relative to Climate Change, the rights that have been violated includes that of thousand upon thousands of living organisms as well as ourselves. The rights that are being limited in terms of speaking, include the right to a safe and secure lifestyle that has not any immediate or dangerous threat imposed upon it. By increasing the levels of pollutants in the atmosphere, not only are lungs getting damaged, but our whole being, as the global temperature increases more and more, melting ice caps and glaciers, increasing the sea level, and furthermore, increasing the number of natural disasters including tsunamis, floods, etc., putting the lives of many, many, MANY, people in danger, as well as animals. For example, varieties of species are put at risk due to causes such as habitat, pollution, lack of water, etc., which had been previous dangers, that is true, that were increased by a large degree by the environmental crisis. Polar bears, which have thrived on a sustainable diet of fish and penguins as well as inhabiting large sheets of ice, finding that suitable areas to live in are rapidly disappearing as ice caps melt, leaving them with two limited options, either find a new area to live or face death in all its inevitably. Unfortunately, several thousands of animals besides polar bears are faced with similar crisis, as they are forced to flee their homes, sometimes to no avail. Although some species would have little to no effect on us, the extinction of a great number of them would upset the fragile balance of what unites all species together, crashing down like a house of cards. In the end, the group/person that is limiting our rights is ourselves, we are responsible primarily for our self-destruction although there are outside factors. The situation is similar to a literary situation of society vs. itself, if society extended to a majority of the species on Earth.

In order to take back the rights we deserve as well as fighting against unjust authority, people have lead marches, protests, and even spoken out against the ways humans have been urging the crisis on through consistent yet unintentional means. A well known march took place in 2015, when thousands of people marched through snow in protest global warming in Canada. Al Gore, former Vice President under Bill Clinton, was featured in the documentary, the Inconvenient Truth, regarding his campaign to inform the public on the dangers of Global Warming, as well as contradicting the belief that some believe that Global Warming is a hoax. The most recent march took place on Saturday, where people rallied against the president as well as global warming , in the fight to show that, A), it is a threat, and B) We, as people, need to do something about it. Individuals have made a difference by recycling, riding bikes as to not use gas, etc. A difference, no matter how small, is nonetheless, still a difference. Individually, it may not make a large difference, but if many people do it, it is almost certain to influence the course of the crisis.
