Reflection 3: Social Structure

This video felt very powerful and worth sharing on here for this module. This video is meant to be inspiring and hopeful for our future of breaking down social structures. Included in the video are a series of images and VoiceOver, that show what is going on in our world, the unity and the separation. This video shows different hierarchy in society to really fit the theme of the module. This module focused on Social Structure, specifically this video reminded me of C. Wright Mills work, "The Power Elite" that we read this module. In this reading we discussed a group of powerful elites who seem to be the most powerful, and are secretly running our lives. However, as we discussed, the elite aren't the problem but the social institute, thus this video inspires people to recognize that if we can change the structures or the social institute and take away the power it has, that we can change all of our lives for the better.

Reflection 6: Gender

In module 6, we discussed Gender. We learned that gender can very much be a social construct and we discussed the diversity in gender and the importance for gender equality. In this module, we went over readings that discussed the discrimination of the transgender community and how this effects all people. I choose this poem for my gender reflection because it felt extremely fitting. Sometimes everyone needs a reminder we all started the same way, in a womb, and that everyone is beautiful no matter what label is chosen for them or the label they give themselves. This felt needed after all the bathroom bills being created to limited the rights of transgender people, because at the end of the day we are all just humans.

Reflection 5: Deviance and Crime

IN module 5, we discussed deviance and crime. One of our readings "The Medicalization of Deviance" by Peter Conrad and Joseph W. Schneider, describes how when someone exhibits "bad behavior" they are often treated with medicine. This treatment of medicine is a way for social to control these people and make them act "normal". Social deviance is a behavior that is violating societal norms. When someone acts deviant they are often medicated, medication has become so normalized and almost everyone is on some type of medication or will you some at some point in their life. So for my reflection I decided to add this art or meme, I found it on an article by Medicalization. This piece fits into this module because it describes how society is starting to give medication as a form of control over everyone, in this case, using medication to control children.
