Throughout my school years my favourite subjects were always related to science, specially when it involved animals. Therefore I have always liked watching documentaries about the animal world. Later in life I shifted my interests in learning how much we impact the envrioment and thus the animals. In effort in being more conscious lifestyle, I started change my views and my habits and a consequence.

Having read more about formal, non-formal and informal learning has me thinking about my journey as a student. At first glimpse, I would say that formal learning has definitely played a big part in the development of my capabilities, especially when referring to more standardized learnings. However, when thinking about their impact I can’t help but also recognize the importance that non-formal and informal role had on my evolution as a person and a student. The article of the Council of Europe makes a good point when highlighting the influence that experiences and the environment have in children when they are developing their language skills. In that sense informal settings have a tremendous role in our education. Reading is another example, that when done in an informal setting - for pleasure - can benefit the reader with skills there weren’t aimed in the first place. Therefore, I think it’s important, as a future teacher, to look for opportunities to involve students in activities that can occur in that kind of environment. Going to the library, museums or theatres, as well as proposing projects that allow students to enrich their experiences in their daily lives, are a few examples that come to mind when thinking about non-formal or informal learning.

Having a defined group that you can meet on a regular basis, with the purpose of discussing ideas and sharing experiences, is one way create a PLN (Professional Learning Neywork). However this type of exchange is not very frequent, so I understand and value the need to rely on a tool like Twitter or Facebook when conceiving your own PLN - especially because it enables a much more direct connection. Another advantage of using Twitter as your PLN - for example - is the possibility to determine your own needs and goals so that you can later acquire the sources. In that sense, you are in charge of your own professional development.

Whether it will be through Twitter, Facebook, Instagram or even in person, collaborating between (online) colleagues is essential to evolve as a teacher. Talking about your experiences with others can help you reflect on your methods and practices, as well as gather ideas and enrich your knowledge. Even though, social media is used in a more informal setting I believe that it can be effective in sharing resources, essentially because we are able to connect with other realities, including people from other countries. On the other hand, social media equips teachers with direct access to ideas and advice from fellow educators, which makes the learning process much more convenient and accessible.
