Employees and Private Contractors have different incentive programs structured for them, as Australian Law sets up different regulations around the payment of employees and contractors. Depending on the type of work, and who is hiring a person may be working as a private contractor and thus receives a different incentive.

Example:
Ian was hired by marketing firm to sell raffle tickets for The Endeavor Foundation. Each person that was hired, was put on a contracting style of award and was paid on a commission basis only. Depending on the amount of tickets sold, was based on how much money Ian earned in a day. There was no hourly wage as he was a Private Contractor.

In 1996 a financial incentive program was introduced for General Practitioners, through the Better Practice Program. This was then superseded by the Practice Incentives Program (PIP) in 1998. PIP offered 10 different practice level of incentives which include quality prescribing, early diagnosis and effective management of diabetes; cervical screening of under-screened women; continuing care for patients with asthma; encouraging better health care of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients; adopting new eHealth technologies; operating after hours; providing teaching sessions for medical students; practicing in a rural location; and performing certain non-referred services in rural location. In 2011, 68% of Practices were registered for the PIP, and 90% of GP's said that less than 10% of their income came from a PIP incentive.

All people who work MUST be paid for the time that they do so. An employee can be paid commission only as an incentive. An award or registered agreement can set out rules about how this can be done.
