Our course will take place entirely online.

We are going from the multidimensional communication environment of a class to the two-dimensional experience of our screens. Nonverbal ways to express meaning (gestures, body language, facial clues) are harder to perceive and decipher. Therefore, it is very important that you focus during our classes.

Consistent engagement, empathy, and clear communication will make our learning experience both enjoyable and rewarding.

Now more than ever it is important that every member of the class takes responsibility for building and maintaining a harmonious community within the class, with flexibility, care and patience.

Language learning happens through interaction, we construct the class all together and its atmosphere and efficiency depends on each of us.

Please ask questions every time something is not clear to you, without hesitation. Do not let uncertainty and potential mistakes stop you. A question is a manifestation of your engagement. Your curiosity makes the class more vivacious and your teacher will be happy to answer any and all questions, and other students will benefit from them.

You can ask questions in class, either by raising your hand virtually on Zoom or using the chat function. Outside of class, please put your questions in the discussion board. The other students will benefit from seeing your questions.

Clear communication is the main way to realize an ideal interaction. Your feedback will help in shaping the class in the most satisfactory way.

Stay in touch and write an email to signal a problem, a concern, a suggestion. You will receive an answer in a few hours. Be more patient during weekends, but express any perplexity at any time.

Do assigned work consistently and thoroughly. Continuity is the basis for remembering and internalizing new information, and you will help make the course more effective and enjoyable by your active and continuous contributions.

Please use your computer/laptop to access Zoom, you will have to participate not only speaking but also typing and will need access to an efficient keyboard.

You are expected to share your video on zoom throughout the whole duration of the class. Your face has to be visible, so please make sure that the light in your room allows it. If you prefer you can use a virtual background.

Make sure the space in which you attend your class is not disturbed and allows you to listen and talk without disturbances. If your environment is not quiet, please use headphones with a microphone and keep your microphone muted.

You are also expected to be dressed with a certain level of decorum, appropriate for an in-person class. This being an Italian course, you will learn how much appearances matter to Italians, not only as a frivolous concern but also as a legacy of centuries of artistic pursuit.

Please turn off your cell phones and other devices during class, and avoid the distraction of incoming external messages and other solicitations.

You can drink your water, tea, coffee etc. in class, but please do not eat. Make sure you eat something before class if necessary, as class is from 6-8pm.

Do not get up and leave your screen randomly. Maintain a certain composure and send a message to let us know if you need to leave for any reason.

If your child, cat, dog, enters your space… don’t lose your concentration and avoid exhibiting it for a prolonged stretch of time.

Please let the professor know immediately if you experience any technical problems.

We will take a break during the two-hour class, and do varied activities to make it as interesting and captivating as possible.

Your participation and disposition will contribute to the success of each class. Please do not sit back and watch the class, but engage in it, giving your unique contribution.

Focus exclusively on what is taking place in class, that is the best way to learn and take advantage of our time together. Your engagement shows your respect to the other students and to the teachers, and ultimately, to yourself.

Italian is the language spoken in our class. Due to the online nature of this specific class, we may occasionally use English when clarity would be otherwise too compromised, but please use only Italian to interact with the teacher and the other students (even when you are in the breakout rooms…) unless the teacher indicates otherwise.

Italian has binary grammatical genders for referring to persons and nouns. This linguistic pattern does not represent more fluid perceptions of social gender. While there is no consensus in Italian, even in trans and non-binary communities, how this can be solved, we are committed to working to find solutions so that everyone can feel welcome in our space. Please be respectful of everyone's preferred pronouns. One solution non-binary native speakers utilize is to switch between feminine and masculine pronouns and adjective endings fluidly while speaking/writing. If you have concerns about this binary nature of the language as regards your gender identity and expression, please feel free to reach out.
