Models for Identification

There are two models that educators use to identify and support our students with special needs.
One of those is an IQ test, which uses standardized testing to determine if a student has a discrepancy between their ability to succeed in a particular subject and their ability to perform in the subject.
Another form of identification model is the response to intervention (RTI). This model below demonstrates the use of different tiers in our education system today.

Strategies for Individual Differences

Team Teaching - When students are in need of additional support, some teachers partner up to assist the student. By doing this, they need to collaborate their schedules and transitional activity procedures for their student to follow. They should also remind the students to have the materials that they need for the next teacher or activity and keep them responsible for their work.
Modifying Whole-Class Instruction - When instructing students with individual differences, teachers should take into account the seating of the troubled student and the supervision that they will need. Additionally, assign assignments that are interactive and with directions that are clearly written or orally given.
Supplementary Instruction - Our students with special needs, might need additional instruction techniques that can be provided through Content Mastery Classroom (CMC). Students who go to CMC often allow the integration of assistance that many students do not often receive in the regular classrooms.
Individualized Instruction - Teachers should focus on the student's pace, ability to comprehend, and be motivated on the material presented to them. Individualized instruction should monitored, given appropriate time constraints, sufficient resources for the student to use, and give the teacher adequate time to plan and develop activities.

Here is a few things we need to remember when instructing our students who are lower-achieving!
1. Students who are low-achieving make more progress when supervised often
2. Organize the lessons to match some of the student's pace and understanding of the material
3. Set aside a pre-lesson that focuses on some of the prerequisites of the main lesson.
4. Keep and encourage a positive mindset for the students to succeed!
