As seen in the fictional short story Araby, by James Joyce, disappointment usually comes along with young love.  Throughout the story the young boy tries to impress a foreign girl who he idealizes because of how she looks. In the end, the story is a coming of age story that reflects how in life things don't always go as planned and he learns how to go through life with a more realistic lens. 

Heartbreak can change how a person goes through life and the way they view the world. This story demonstrates how the main character, the boy experiences his first "relationship" set back. The author illustrates this with the description of the girl through the eyes of the boy, with examples such as "my heart leaped" and "my confused adoration," which is how most view their first loves. As the story progresses, he begins to get more and more frustrated as his uncle is late to give him money, and the bazaar closes when he gets there. The realization then sets in that he will not impress the girl and he is filled with "anguish anger". Feminism has experienced three major waves, the primary occurring within the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The first wave focused on the acquirement of woman’s suffrage. 
 In the short story, The Story of an Hour, Kate Chopin expresses the perspective of a feminist in the 1890's through character development, historical setting, and  contrasting point of views. Kate Chopin was a wise woman for her time, advanced in feminist ideals.

Character development explains the contrasting perspectives the woman holds regarding her husbands recent death. Initially, the character experiences the typical effects of grief. She cries at first, feeling abandoned by her husband. She then goes and isolates herself in her room. These actions are expected from the character, unlike her later response. "...she saw beyond that bitter moment a long procession of years to come that would belong to her absolutely. And she opened and spread her arms out to them in welcome." (Paragraph 13). Her realization that the ties of her marriage are eliminated is extremely comforting to Mrs. Mallard. She is overcome by a feeling of freedom, a feeling she could not experience when her husband was alive. The woman represents the voices of women in this time period, imprisoned by the societal conventions forcing females to tend to their husbands and children at home. When Mrs. Mallard discovers her husbands is alive, she transitions into her primary state of mind, once again bound by her marriage. This discovery is too difficult for the woman, eventually causing her death. The life she imagined is ripped away from her as he walks through the door.

While men enjoyed the gift of freedom,  women were expected to act as a man's extension.The Story of an Hour, a short story written by Kate Chopin, discusses the inner workings of a woman through character development, setting and literary motifs. 

The audience is able to see through the eyes of Mrs. Mallard through the development of her character throughout her mourning of her deceased husband.We see that she is oppressed in society because her husband "never looked save with love upon her". (Commentary) She leads the audience to believe the death of her husband has affected her negatively, but we come to find out that it was the source of her happiness, and her new found freedom. Instead of mourning her dead husband, she "saw beyond that bitter moment... and spread her arms out to them in welcome."

Kate Chopin's short story, Story of  an Hour, depicts how under the unfortunate death of her husband, Mrs. Mallard can discover her freedom. Kate Chopin reveals how an individual can stand against society to destroy gender norms  and how people can react negatively to that change. 

The death of a loved one is supposed to be a tragic event in a person's life. Kate Chopin uses Mrs. Mallard's situation to reveal the oppression that women feel by society in their lifetimes, though not always seen as a bad thing by the society itself. At the beginning of the story we see that Josephine goes to great lengths to ensure that Mrs. Mallard is told that her husband is dead in the most gentle way possible, because everyone knows that Mrs. Mallard is supposed to react negatively to the situation. We see that at the beginning Mrs. Mallard "wept at once, with sudden, wild abandonment, in her sister's arms." But quickly by looking at the weather, "the tops of trees that were all aquiver with the new spring of life," a chance for a new life can be seen. The death of Mrs. Mallard's husband means that she is no longer bound by society and all of its rules for her life. For once in her life she can finally be "free, free, free." Mrs. Mallard is no longer bound and can finally be her own person.  However, Mrs. Mallard knows that the society does not want her to be free. She is expected to be bound and to be controlled by the standards that society has placed. In fact she even realizes this when she acknowledges that "she would weep again when she saw the kind, tender hands [of her husband] folded in death."
