One of these being the development that happens on beaches. This construction and traffic destroys many nest. Trash or items left on the beach also discourage mothers to lay their eggs on the beach. 
While in the ocean many sea turtles are caught in netting by accident but are then left to die. One way is if you see a green or any sea turtle on the beach that is nesting, leave them alone. Don't use flash photography or try to pet her. Of course there are also many hotlines people can call if they ever see a sea turtle they believe is sick or dead. 
The North Carolina Sea Turtle Protection Program also for years has been lending a helping hand to sea turtles. They have many volunteers who record sea turtle nesting sites, so they are protected.
