It began as early as the 1820s, with the American Temperance Society starting in Boston in 1826. The Temperance Movement was in part driven by people of religion, who believed that people who drank ceased to adhere to God's teachings. The goals of the Temperance Movement were varied, with some members advocating for complete abstinence while others only believed in abstaining from hard liquor. The Temperance Movement was also varied in that some advocates aimed to use the moral indecency of alcohol as their main tactic, and other members wished to achieve temperance from a purely legal standpoint. By 1868, Maine was back to being the only state with prohibition laws.
