The Temperance Movement was a social movement that opposed the sale and consumption of alcohol. It began as early as the 1820s, with the American Temperance Society starting in Boston in 1826. The Temperance Movement was in part driven by people of religion, who believed that people who drank ceased to adhere to God's teachings. The goals of the Temperance Movement were varied, with some members advocating for complete abstinence while others only believed in abstaining from hard liquor. The Temperance Movement was also varied in that some advocates aimed to use the moral indecency of alcohol as their main tactic, and other members wished to achieve temperance from a purely legal standpoint. These differencses, along with a sense of ethnic and religious elitism that ran throughout the movemen, got in the way of the movement's cohesion.

Lyman Beecher was a minister from Connecticut, who was also a co-founder of the American Temperance Society. He became involved in temperance when he noticed many people drinking heavily, even in formal situations, and decided to take a stand. He wrote six sermons about the dangers of alcohol, published in 1826. (To be continued)

Although the Temperance Movement did get several states to attempt prohibition in their legislature, most of their influence dissipated over time. By 1868, Maine was back to being the only state with prohibition laws. The Temperance Movement was largely unorganized and lacked cohesion, and so their effects, at least on legislature, were not lasting.
