Have students add to the appropriate section of the google doc throughout the year to share any activities or things they've done or read about in relation to the corresponding interest. At the end of the year, have students reflect on the activities from the year and share with the class. Have them add links, photos, videos, etc to the doc.

I created a Microsoft Form for my students that asks them questions about their handwriting. I would like to develop their ability to analyze their own work and self-correct it. They have to complete a 7 question survey: date, how was your hw on the line, size of letters, spacing between words, margin use, one "glow" (strength), one "grow" (area to improve).
~Megan

I display my students' work in the halls (typically craft with related handwriting activity) in the hall outside of my therapy room. The students love to look at each others' work. I'd like to create a small note sheet for the students to respond to each others' work so they have more feedback than mine! I'd like the students to comment on one "glow" or thing they did well, for example, "I like the way your letters touch the line." and one "grow" or thing to keep working on. I might start with just "glows" first!
~Megan

My students often complain about not being able to get into more detail on certain subjects (typically World Wars, Genocides, or Stalin). There really is just not enough time to spend three weeks on World War II. I would like to use a Genius Hour maybe twice a week to allow students to find a topic they are passionate about in history, research and create something - whether it be resources for other students or something that they share online. I think allowing my students more freedom to dive into what they are interested in would help change their mindset about school and the purpose of school.
-Samantha

I currently require my students to use Schoology to post current event assignments and to post group work during class, but the students would benefit from using an online platform (such as Schoology or even Padlet) to collaborate. One new idea I have is to use these platforms for independent reading discussions. Students could be grouped by what book they’re reading and collaborate online. They could share ideas, comments, and analysis as they read. They could also post book reviews.
- Jennifer Sommer

Identity Boxes

Right now in ELA 9 the students are working on Identity boxes in conjunction with the Memoire Night by Elie Wiesel. They have certain requirements that they must complete such as character traits that Elie could identify with, major events that happened, who they felt had a major impact on him, including a timeline of events, props and various visuals. Everything that is included needs to have a rational/evidence to support the use. The idea was for kids to use a shoe box…however, today, I had a group discussing a digital box! They were discussing the possibility of using various programs to create a virtual box and including all of their information digitally. They would still be required to bring in 3 objects to represent Elie’s identity, but they discussed how they could display these with the virtual box in the background. I was so excited and impressed with this line of thinking. No pun intended but they thought outside of the box and beyond the digital tool of just using the internet for pictures and quotes.
Erin Griggs

Let's Go Shopping!

Students will learn how to say what they like to shop for in our next unit, whether it be electronics, books, clothing etc. I have many ideas in mind, more than just a one and done type activity. In fact, I will have several ongoing activities to help them reach their goal. One idea I have is to take the kids on a shopping trip via the internet to the famous Galeries LaFayette in France and El Corte Inglés in Spain. They will have the opportunity to peruse the catalog to find items that they would like to purchase, how to complete an on-line order and how to convert currency. In another part of the ongoing activity, they will practice essential questions and phrases needed to communicate in the target language when they "shop"!
Michelle

I had a student that work hard on writing a letter/story about his stuttering. After connecting globally through technology, he learned of the National Stuttering Foundation, which is a non-profit organization in the world dedicated to bringing hope and empowerment to children and adults who stutter. He found that they publish letters from students in their magazine. He wanted to publish his story and we just got done submitting his work in the hope it will get published in their magazine. This was a great way to connect him globally to other children who stutter and publish his word for a global audience.
-Ryen Ciminelli

We did not want to meet as a full staff so we communicated through Hangout. It worked great. Our principal is working with the technology department as we speak to give our students access to it so we can use it in the following weeks.
*Nadine

How many times have we heard this? My favorite is student's reactions when this question is asked. Many kiddos will say, "umm, like, everywhere." I've tried to incorporate area, perimeter, and volume to their personal lives. I have them choose a room in their home/apartment to redecorate. I've built loft beds in my children's rooms, so I show that. We don't have to stick with a traditional bed, dresser and hamper.
~ Lisa

As we are in very uncharted territory, I am thinking about students in my US History class making a digital vision board about what they are going through during this Pandemic. They are Primary Sources in history. Why not have them document what they are going through? It goes beyond the traditional way of teaching US History. We don't use google in my district, so I would let them choose the way they would like to document their experience. - Sarah Pressberg
