Monday. We presented our instruments and finished them. Since I was ahead of schedule I made another instrument inspired by colleagues. My first instrument was made of keys on strings, the second was a rereading of a kalimba only made of wood. I wanted to explore more of a melody instrument than a rhythmic one. The keys instrument seems like a rattle and has a dreamy touch, the kalimba makes arranges and has various sounds. It's a more complex instrument. I had some difficulties while making the kalimba inspired one because we hadn't special wood glue. Lauren gave the idea to nail the pieces but I eventually glued the with superglue and pressed it on the machine on printing room. It worked but I ran it twice so it was safer.

Today we got our groups. A participant didn't finish yesterday's activity of building the instrument so we rushed things a little. Since I made two instruments I borrowed it. We also recorded our music on my cellphone. We had fun doing it because we are not used to coordinate our movements and music is all about that. We kept it simple but effective and I really enjoyed our final result. We will most likely start the animation and graphic scores tomorrow since the main work is all set, and that is the song.
We got a name for our band. It's called Trash Babies. That because when starting today's session it's sounded like baby instruments and sound making toys. But in the end we twisted a bit so it's like a punk baby. Our logo and might include this baby figure so it has a comic vein.

Today we scheduled to rehearse but I got too late. But I made it in the vary end and we decided to use yesterday's version because it is good enough. They told they only recorded again the instruments by themselves in case something goes wrong while editing. Gabriel is taking the animating responsibility to him since the others aren't from moving image nor understand editing programs anyway. By tomorrow we'll have a version to discuss in group and change it over the week.

Our group is very ahead of schedule and it is being great. Today we sorted out the graphic scores for the song. Yasmin was absent and Luciano was still working on his instrument. Gabriel helped conceive the graphics that I was struggling with. We invented some signs for a couple instruments and used the sound waves mechanics to represent others. The animation will be made this weekend so it matches the scores we just made and so we still have time to suggest any other alteration along the next week.

Me and Luciano today worked on the visual identity and logo for our band. It's name is "Trash Babies". We got references of punk babies to make the logo as seen on research file. We took turns on drawing the baby so it would have the exact amount of babyness and punk edge. We got it by the end of the day. We decided that it should have a more rounded face and it's eyes would express the punkness. The baby also features a mohawk. For our graphic score, we arranged on photoshop the figures we've been working on and decided to print it on our school's printing room. We had to order in the special paper to burn the canvas so we could print a lot of options until Friday.

Today we printed many different copies of our visual identity on different papers. We tested which one was best for our purposes and decided to go with a thicker one. It wasn't as shiny as the other copies so it was a decisive factor. The shiny ones weren't a good option because it's made no reference to the rest of our work. Yasmin printed some coloured graphics but since our video is all black and white we'll probably go with the ones that match.

We discussed a lot of subjects one of them being the first uninteresting day turning not necessarily into a bad reflection day. We also had the idea of printing in white on black paper, our graphic scores. Yasmin had the idea of using tracing paper also, with provides a new layer for them, when against any light. It will be a bonus feature to it.

Today we arranged the display of our presentations. We all worked very well in group. We decided to put our graphic scores on the window because we used tracing paper, so the natural light will provide an excellent outcome. We also intercalated the white copies and the ones on black paper. We also had a few other copies in colour that we decide to put on the bottom. We had problems to fixate the tracing paper because the tape showed and degraded the work. We arranged double sided tape and cut it real thin. And that problem was solved.

Presentation day. We decided to first play the video so we wouldn't exceed the time limit. Some members had more facility to explain the work. I felt confident because every aspect was talked in group. We received some very interesting feedback. Like the band identity not matching the rest of our visuals. That happened because when we were animating the first idea was to make a baby but then we left that behind while the band logo still had this punk baby.

Today we had a digital illustration workshop that helped a lot. I did't knew how brushes could be reconfigured in shape and size. Alex also though how to make a new brush with any texture you want. I started painting the waves for my 1 out of 4 illustrations as a test and I am already enjoying them. Yesterday I made a hand painted version but I couldn't undo the strokes and redo them as I wanted to, and that as fixed when painting digitally. I mixed many shades of blue and green. I was with the reference picture right on my side so I could really see each colour in specific parts. I realised that some parts of the foam on top of the wave aren't all white but they have a shade of soft blue.

Today I started to ry the painting techniques that I might use on my final work. I experimented with both watercolour and acrylic painting. They didn't turn out so smooth as I wanted. I should study more in order to perform and achieve my goal. Even though these are just tryouts, I noticed I haven't used the proper papel for painting. Sizing is set to A2, so I rather go for watercolour papers than canvases.
I am not done with experimenting just yet. Tomorrow we'll have a digital illustration workshop, and I'm thinking that this technique will save me a lot of time and deliver a good piece at the end. I believed actual painting would mimic the watery texture that I was planning and studying (as seen on research file) I'll produce better images. I think in paint it won't work because they need to blend better. Maybe in oil paint this turns out as desired but since we'll be working on watercolour paper at best, I'll give digital a try.

Today i finished the tsunami painting. After much study of underwater lighting i started picture 4. I now have five pictures. I have a scene that is a reflection from the glass. I’ll use the tsunami for that. These are the two blue ones. The event that causes the end of the world is the giant wave, but in a parallel universe what caused it is actually a drink in a bar. Very non sense and comic. The scene from that bar is done. Although I didn’t achieve the texture of shine on the leather from the couches, the reddish couloring plays well to build a comfort feeling in the room.

I am changing a lot of fundamentals in the illustrations such as merging two pictures in one. I'm also struggling with colours since I have this set notion of having two blueish and 2 reddish A2s. One character of a parallel universe is giving me a special headache because it is made with transparent tool. Any time I miss a stroke I need to go backwards and redo it again. The arms and the neck need to have a overlay feeling that is precisely calculated. All of my attempts to do this were frustrated because I didn't stop to analyse what I should do before doing it.

I determined that they should be four as said on briefing but they'd be half on a blue palette and the other half on a red scale. They should merge together as one narrative but I'm having difficulties. The red section is getting much more of a 2d drawing style while the blue is more of a relistic painting. Also, I didn't finished simple things throughout the painting just because and today in the last day I needed to make one from scratch AND finish all the others. It could've been avoided. Despite problems with time and organisation, and tools, I got a pleasing result that I am eager to revisit. Maybe turning those 4 drawings into a comic or animation.

We started the day at Garoa Hackers Club and I am very confused about this project. I don't know if we are expected to build a game in codes. And I am being realistic when I think that there is no way someone could code a game from scratch in less than two weeks not having done this ever in their life. But it was a nice experience. I enjoyed a lot the nerdy vibes of the place and the arcade games collection.

After, still not liking them, I stood on the porch, and in front of EBAC there's a ceramic workshop. So I got the idea of doing something with that material, as seen in Athos Bulcão's work. I'm not going for tiles, but I like that it is not a board game (aka boring game).

In this project, we had to select a past one to remake. I spent a lot of time evaluating past projects to have a broad notion of what could be done. Although I think I used too much of the time doing this. I selected "Believing is Seeing". I chose this mostly because it was one with the weakest outcomes. Also, I haven't enjoyed myself much on past works, therefore I used that as a criteria as well. It took three days to finally start working, although when I did start I had everything planned. I am really interested in photography, so when I picked this Believing is Seeing I was comfortable to experiment. I have not used the Arabic Gum technique until then, so I learnt it. I was aiming to, besides having a great outcome, to have one more technique on my portfolio. I got this idea from Leticia Zanfolim (another student), because she often made those photography works. I have researched how it works and learnt that the higher contrast better the result will be. So when I looked my own pictures I knew what I had to find. I also chose different photo techniques to merge with the printing. I had a few bokeh pictures that I inverted the colours to print. I had achieved and outgrown my expectations. Since the planning was so intense the result was really beautiful. Unfortunately I had planned to serigraph on top of the pictures but the time was too short to do it. When I did it the first time, it was little to no research. This time, I paid close attention to what I could do. I also used a previous knowledge of photography to achieve a more interesting result.

Fist day of class back from vacations. Tomorrow we need to deliver the Souvenir project. I am excited because I made something with a new material. In this time away from school I went home and reencountered a few friends from high school. My friend Alice is an undergrad in Sculpture at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), so we shared a few gossips but we mostly talked about art and materials. She had a few exposition experiences, and she shared a lot about the importance of artists supporting other artists. Some of her experiences were in collective expositions, so whenever she met new artists her work would improve. And I totally agree, besides, now I have proof of this effectiveness. My souvenir is made of silicon. It is bought in a tube like a toothpaste. I also bought a ice mold to use it with the silicone. I used a few flowers from my hometown and mixed it with the silicone. I thought of that because it is transparent and it can be shapes in any format. The ice mold is in shape of a kiss, so it expresses all the love I had in this period. The material itself represents this conversations with my friend, otherwise it would be possible to make. The flowers bring back a notion of nature, in which I find tranquility and where I've been most of the time this past month.

I never studied perspective and that may be a good opportunity to learn. In the other hand, I do have experience in photographing architectural structures. Back in the day at home, I used to photograph buildings with nature, kind of making a counterpoint to it's unsympathetic and sterile exterior and the seemingly random branches of trees and mountains.

Today we went on a Risograph centre in Santa Cecília. I did not find this experience particularly exiting. It seemed to me that this technique is best employed when in need of larger quantities. Also the image I Brough in was not at it's best because it wasn't contrasted enough. Yesterday I talked to Yasmin about what colours we should use, but in the end I decided to make it red and pink instead of orange and blue, our blue and red, as we agreed. Ivan showed me all the different colours he had in there and I got a little confused. He really marketed this bubblegum colour. And it was beautiful. But it wasn't as loud as I wanted it to be. Maybe it was not the colour, but the contrast on image. Also we decided to make both prints from the same image only slightly dislocated. Some more interesting prints were made with different images in different colours. The final result seemed more complete.

Independent study day I took to develop the project's action plan. I'm thinking of doing it with lithographs. I find this to be my home in printing. I may choose it so I don't stress about a technique, and focus only on it's message. I also considered doing a 3D object. A dice that would incorporate in one side: the whiteness of EBAC's studios; versus the inside of the building where lies the student's gallery, the stairs. That last idea is of the most relevance because our administration is picking on students because of those stairs. I may obtain more success on the narrative aspect of it if I add a character to it. I don't know yet.

This day I spent all hours on my portfolio preparation. Michael gave me a hand by selecting what life drawing I should include, and the ones he picked were not my choices at all. It surprised me. I was also feeling a little in doubt about what BA should I apply to and he helped me with that too. He explained to me that, to him, my portfolio seemed like an illustration portfolio. And I was happy to hear his point. When you can't look at your work without an addicted eye, and the insecurity of not knowing the BA messes up with my head. I tend to think of my work not being good enough for either courses. So an outsider's opinion is welcome. Even more when that someone knows what they are saying.

I'd have more lighting issues but everything was powered up and it took just the morning part of the day. In the afternoon I solved my website issues. I had to figure out what domain I would choose. I considered Behance, Wix, and various others until I decide to go with an old friend. Tumblr. I picked it because I know how it works and it's free. I also already had an idea of what I wanted, so knowing the tool would speed up the process. Despite of having major difficulties, I think I chose wisely.

Today I fished my website. It's clean, has all the pictures and videos up and organised. I created a menu session in which any visitor can locate themselves and dissect the entire content. It's organised by media and some more complex works (such as those from Foundation) have their own page that include everything. There is also a section for prints, that I'm really proud of. It's all white and grey which gives a professional vibe to it. I changed the url to a better one with my name. It was the same since I created this Tumblr account in 2012. And because of that I eded up deleting loads of archives that didn't fit my current works. I am incredibly pleased with the final result.

http://juliamoller-arts.tumblr.com

As to the project, I went on a Hitchcock exposition that really influenced the work. There were loads of posters there and they were really inspiring. I liked the scheme of colours that never surpassed three, and the lettering. It remembered me of an old box of dvd's with a simple graphic detail. It's also on research file. So I merged the photos I took from EBAC's building, and over-layered it with similar drawings. Last week I was testing the perspective drawings and got a good one from the stairs. So I have two pictures that I litographed from the exterior of the building, and one of the inside of the stairs. I used black offset paint to print, and on the stairs I intervened with a graffiti style phrase.

I had to put in some ugly prints because I didn't have time nor money to print it on a better paper/quality. I did printed those in perfect quality but the print store messed up the sizing, and I didn't have money for another round. So I fixed it by printing in school but the printer here is also a mess. I though it would be best a portfolio page with low quality prints than no page at all. We also had to deliver another project today. Surrounding narratives had an interesting briefing but since I was running with my portfolio, I didn't gave it as much attention as I deserved.

I'd like to do the kids' rooms but as a group, we decided to prioritise the common areas. There is a cafeteria, where could be painted fruits and vegetables as characters. The rooftop is also interesting because there is no fun and it is a big space to occupy with art. And since it is outdoors we could play with the view and scale. Also the theme could be spacial or something. We were all very moved to be there seeing all the foster kids. I wished we could paint every room but I tried to focus on what was possible and on the briefing.

In order to star the new projects, today me and my partner analysed what type of illustration we were both into and were we should place it. Not necessarily a mural should match were it is but it would be nice if it did naturally. Since our styles merge in a alien and space narrative we decided to place our work on the rooftop os Casa do Pequeno Cidadão. There is a lot of space in there so we decided to compartmentalise the area with a soccer field and a play area. Ana, the tutor of the day, gave us insight of making all wall talk to each other. We were thinking eat wall separately so her idea was very useful. She showed us a work from Matisse in which he uses cut outs to make his piece. It is on my research file now. Another worry was that the walls are not full height wall, they are middle height. So the structure os the painting must be in landscape necessarily. He thought of colour palette. Since the building is all blue, we could use invert colour such as yellow and oranges to avoid putting more blue or making an arrange that wouldn't match the facade structures that are not in the project.
We started conceptualising the characters that'll be on our crowd. It will be formed by cute aliens so it won't scare the kids but will also have a creative tone to it. This wall will be close the soccer space.

In today’s workshop with Filipe Grimaldi I could develop more my lettering skill. I habe drawn for a few yeas cowboy inspired letters, but today I learned how the embellishments are called. Also there is a proportion to letters that I was not aware of. When we started to paint the mural I had doubts about the colouring but Filipe explained a little about colour theory to uss since the background is blue, the main colour should be orange. They are opposites and complement each other. This colour insight will be helpful in my project because in our site all the wall are deep blue. And we can work with it rather than simply painting it white. We also talked about paint kinds that would work better for murals. Paints that have a more resistent componettare better since we will be painting outdoors.

Working in groups can facilitate the work, but we need organisation. Our mural is enormous, so we divided functions. We figured out what techniques we will be using. We have characters and spaceships to glue on the walls, and we plan on painting the mural's background. So in order to fill the wall with characters we went on a production spree. We created about 30 alien figures. Tomorrow we will select the best ones to digitalise. Eugenio is the expert on Illustrator so he picked one to test the procedure. We got concerned about characters from different members of the group being too different from each other. Eugenio said the strokes can be changed in order to make all drawings unite. In the morning we went on Insigns and got a first impression of what can be done to the final results. We consider using vinyl as a sticker to our illustrations. There are huge printers intros place so there is no problem with big prints. ours are up to 20 meters long. In Insigns they thought us a little about materials. We asked of water resistant ones so we could use, that where we got the vinyl from. In the afternoon we went back to Casa do Pequeno Cidadão to get the measurements from the rooftop.

Our work today was to select the best characters created last time. We have more than 30 figures to pick from, and a wall to fill. We are starting to digitalise and correct on illustrator all imperfections, such as lines and thickness of stroke. We were concerned that when we gathered all figures from the 3 of us they will look too apart from each other. That correction is also thought to homogenise the drawing.
We made several characters more to be sure of our project. We could repeat them all over the wall, and that is the quickest solution, but it'd be best if they were all unique. Since our action plan was well made, and we have a lot of spare time, it was decided that we would make a few more drafts so the final result is better. In this project is hard to keep track of what we are doing because there is a lot to do. We probably got the biggest space of Casa do Pequeno Cidadão. One of the walls is 22 meters long. That freaks me out. When I think of the characters I need to keep in mind their actual size in these walls.

I had some difficulties with the illustrator program but Eugenio who’s also in my group has enough knowledge for the two of us. Then we divided for 4 so it’d be in proper scale size.
Later we glued a piece of fabric so it reinforces the ground. We also painted all the walls blue, but the material absorbed the ink and it was a major stress. We though of starting over with a different material but we insisted and repainted.

In today’s class we finished our maquette. Since we had time, we improved it with a piece of metallic fence. That in order to mimic the real location. We had some difficulties while glueing the styrofoam into each other. We tried many types of glue (styrofoam glue, white glue, instant glue) until we got the results we wanted. I learnt from Eugenio that finishing is as important as the product itself. Our time was very well calculated since day 1. We had spare time in pretty much every step of the way. Which helped us give more attentions and finish things with a better look.
We still have to create the plaques though. We have today and tomorrow to do it and I’m planning on doing it by myself. We need to focus on sharing more the work. I think Eugenio did most of it alone, but it was crucial so we reached the goals in time. He also had more knowledge of illustrator so it made sense that he’d do that.
The most important thing is always to converge all inspirations from members. All speeds need to be in sync so no one needs to be overwhelmed with work. I think we did it, but there are aspects I’d like to improve for next time.
