He’d draw, wait for it to dry, then paint again over and over till eventually he was finished.

The virgin has a halo above her and They're on clouds. If you look in the back there's golden clouds with more cherubs or babies. It's a nice drawing that represents conception, which refers to the conception of Mary in the womb of her mother. I'm not really religious so I'm not sure how it makes me feel.

Katsushika Hokusai
Kohada Koheiji, from the series "One Hundred Ghost Tales (Hyaku monogatari)"
1826–1836
Color woodblock print; chuban

1. This Art work is part of a series "One Hundred Ghost Tales", what made this art work beautiful to me was the medium, the colors are very pleasing to the eyes and I really like that compared to very flashy bright colors. It doesn't really express any belief but it sparked an interest in horror related art, it could also serve as an influence to horror culture, the reason I say that is because that's why I chose the art work, because its horror related. Kohada Koheiji was an actor in the Edo Period, who was believed to have been killed by his wife and her lover. Kohada would later come back as a ghost killing his wife then driving her lover crazy to suicide.
2. I originally was gonna choose "The Great Wave" from the same artist but the art work "Kohada Koheiji" caught my interest from its short ghost story. I relate with the artworks horror, I really like ghost stories, folklore, conspiracies, etc. (Anything horror related)

Joan Mitchell
City Landscape
1955
Oil on linen
1. This art works aim is too be abstract, what made it beautiful to me was the movement of the paint as well as the strange smudges. It seems strange. What I see seems to be different to the artists view. The art seems to express the landscape of a city with all the bright flashy colors of buildings, cars, homes all flashy colors. It reminds me of an LA trip where I looked out the window and saw all those flashy lights and colors from the crowded streets and roads entering the free way. It seems to be a form of expression at how we might look at things for example I asked my roommate to look at this painting and he told me he saw a faces or smuggled building like shapes. Keep in mind I didn't tell him the art works name.
2. I chose this art work because of the description for how Joan Mitchell paints it seemed interesting to me how she lets the paint dry or drip as it pleases letting the paint paint for her. I can relate to this image, as I mentioned before it reminds me of the streets of LA. Like it doesn't look to me like buildings but I see the colorful paint she uses illustrating the flashy lights from the illuminated city.

This watercolor copy depicts the queen being led by the hand goddess Isis.
What makes this artwork beautiful is what Queen Nefertari is wearing. Queen Nefertari is wearing a long and semi-transparent white dress typical of the Ramesside court at the time. Tied at the middle is a red sash, around her neck is a broad collar of gold, faience, carnelian and turquoise and her wrist are decorated with a blue and white bracelets.
I choose this artwork because how powerful it looks. Nefertari was considered "the most beautiful of them" between Isis other wives. I love that she was able to stand strong next to her husband.

Fra Bartolommeo
The Nativity
1505-1507
Oil on panel

The story behind this artwork is, the Virgin kneels humbly as she gazes at the Christ Child, while Joseph assumes a pose of restrained wonderment, as if suddenly aware of the infant’s divine nature.
What I found beautiful about this artwork is how the family shelters in a rustic stall erected within the ruins of an edifice understood to be the palace of David at Bethlehem. This juxtaposition of architecture symbolizes Christ’s establishment of his new church on the Old Testament order of the Jews. Reinforcing this device is a young tree springing from a remnant of ancient stones directly above the infant.
I choose this artwork because of how beautiful it shows the Virgin Mary seeing her son for the first time . I love any pictures that has Christ in it because I enjoy learning the meaning behind the picture.

Frederic Edwin Church
View of Cotopaxi
1857
Oil on canvas

I think it's amazing that Frederic Edwin Church traveled to South America to meticulously study the tropical landscape. The artist produced at least ten finished paintings of the Ecuadorian volcano, this one completed in his studio just before his second visit to the region. Church viewed, "nature with all its creative and destructive wonders, was evidence of divine power".
When I saw this artwork the first things I noticed was how beautiful the waterfalls looks then I saw the white snow on the mountain. If you closely at the artwork you can see a person on a boat enjoying the beautiful view then there's the lady sitting on the rock watching from far. I choose this artwork because I love waterfalls. I have actually traveled and hike down just to see a waterfall, so just like the artist I wanted to enjoy the peaceful nature.

To me the beauty of this art piece is how realistic the artist made it feel. It’s very representational. It is so well crafted it’s almost life like. The grapes and wine look so real. The crystal wine glass even has the glare from a light of a clean glass. The cake is well balanced with detail. This is expressing unity of different types of desserts.

2. I chose this painting because my family had one similar in the dining room. The painting they have is a of a fruit platter in the similar fashion with realistic representation like the painting I chose. Seeing this painting brought back some good memories growing up at the dining table breaking bread with my family. I remembered asking my mom once why she had a painting of a fruit platter. Her response was that it represented unity and that’s why its in the dining room, as a family should be untied no matter your differences, just like all the fruit in the platter. You need one to compliment the other.

This print was created in 1519 and the detail is impressive. From the waves and curves in baby Jesus’ hair to the way Virgin Mary is sitting. The ruffles on her dress are amazingly engraved. This artwork represents motherhood at its finest. The story it tells about the Virgin Mary nursing Jesus is amazing and shows that he was an ordinary baby who later became the savior of all. This express love, family, and unity which the catholic religion is all about.

2. I chose this artwork because of the beauty and representation of Virgin Mary showing baby Jesus’ love. It reminds me of when my kids were born, and my wife would nurse them to sleep. The bond and unity that they have is because of moments like this. There is nothing more beautiful than the bond that a mother has with her child.

Who ever created this must have had a great imagination, was very skilled, had great attention to detail. It’s a serpent coiled around the center with two hands, one holding a flower and the other a knife. According to the Quetzalcoatl-Ehecatl, this ornament was connected to warriors and these type of shell pieces were located within royal palaces and used for ceremonies by the Mexica elite. These pieces were highly esteemed in Aztec times.

2.

Vincent van Gogh
The Bedroom

1889
Oil on Canvas
1. The artworks choice of color seem relaxing to the artist but to others it seem might appear nervous or unstable. I would have to agree and disagree with that statement because personally I like the color pallet Van Gogh used, I even think its a bit relaxing. What made this art work beautiful to me was the color pallet its pleasing to the eyes, I also like how cartoony the bedroom look like from a kids story. It doesn't really bring out any belief in me but I do see how it might be expressing nervous or unstable energy. I feel like the image can become ire as the room looks small and confined almost claustrophobic inducing. Well the story behind this art work was around the time Van Gogh moved into his first own house. He was excite to paint painting and hang them all over his rooms walls but then got tired of it with no inspiration he took 2 days in bed till he decided to paint a painting of his room. This or course ain't the first version as he would send the first painting to his brother then repaint it after the first one took water damage. Van Gogh also painted a 3rd version which was a smaller size and a gift to his mother.
2. I really like Van Gogh's oil paintings as well as his art style it looks realistic while also looking cartoony and pleasing to the eyes, I was gonna originally do his other Oil Painting "The Starry Night", but I read the information on the AIC website and that caught my attention too. The only thing I think I can relate to would have to be cartoony art style but I can't relate to the art work as I don't usually paint.

1. I chose the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel as my for beauty sake piece. I admire Michelangelo's attention to detail and how he tied so many sections together. This world famous master piece located in the Vatican is amazing. I really appreciate that he use the Fresco technique to give the painting texture. I can stare at this all day. Each section is a work of art in itself. It makes me feel connected spiritually. It draws me to it.
2. I chose this not only of the beauty, but because of the significance of the location. To have a ceiling painted in a Chapel in the Vatican that makes you feel like the heavens are looking down at you and you are looking up at them, with significant images, really makes you feel touch by the heavens.

1. The aim of the Last Supper Painting by Leonardo da Vinci makes me emotional when I see it. It's interesting that Jesus was sitting with his "friends" knowing what was to come. Meanwhile his group appears to be in a state of normalcy while they sat around eating and drinking. The Painting to me makes me feel lonely for Jesus. This world famous painting draws me to it very deeply. It really makes me think what a humble and forgiving person he is. If I were in his shoes I would be running for the hills, postponing the inevitable or starting World war AD.
2. I grew up with a replica of this painting in my home. I have appreciated this painting for many years. I chose this because I can't say I relate to it, which draws me to it. I am humbled to know the emotions this brings me.

When I laid my eyes on the picture it literally made my eyes tear up. It was deep. I stared at the picture for a good 20 minutes. It stopped me in my tracks. I have never been caught of guard by art before resting my eyes on this painting. I couldn't take my eyes off of it. It made me feel the pain of the man visiting the wall. It made me feel the sorrow. This is my all time favorite painting to this day.

Unknown Artist
Ceramic Horn
Late 18th or early 19th century
Glazed pottery

This pottery art piece has beautiful curved line and blue flower patterns. It caught my eyes immediately due to its unique pattern and material. The artist combined two completely different concepts together beautifully. The traditional Chinese ceramic patterns look lovely and exquisite in the shape of a French horn. Ceramic and its pattern represent Chinese culture, and the french horn represents french culture. The artist is trying to use this combination to express their appreciation of beauty in both cultures. Unlike other artworks representing beauty, this artwork used a creative way to link both cultures together. That is why it stands out and makes me choose this art piece. I grow up with this kind of traditional blue ceramic pattern plates. However, it is not popular in China anymore. It reminds me of my childhood.

Unknown Artist
Torso of a Bodhisattva
ca. 5th century
Schist

This religious statue is beautifully carved out of stone. This Bodhisattva’s curly hair, facial expression, jewels, and garments are detailed craftsmanship sculpted. His facial expression and gesture appear to be calm and peaceful. This statue was from Gandharan, a neighboring region of India. There, they combined the Buddhism and Roman sculpture and created this sculpture. This is a way to unify both cultures from different regions. He is wearing Indian garments, but the statue style reflects Roman sculpture more.

It also made Buddhism easier to be accepted by the Ancient Greek culture and helped to spread Buddhism further. This statue appears to be a prince who gives up all his fortune and meditates towards Nirvana, which makes him a Bodhisattva. That is why he is wearing all the elegant jewellery.

I choose this one among others because this statue appears different from the Maitreya people can see in Chinese temples; it represents the specific region’s region belief. I can relate to this artwork because I’m very familiar with Buddhism. However, it is interesting to see a Bodhisattva statue in a completely different style than I used to see.

Ammi Phillips
Mrs. Mayer and Daughter
1835–40
Oil on canvas

This is a portrait painting by American painter Ammi Phillips. There are two people in this painting, Mrs Mayer and her daughter sitting on her lap. I believe their facial expression and clothing are beautiful and painted. They both dress well and hold a small flower piece in their hands, which appears to be a peaceful outdoor weekend. This is one of the most beautiful paintings of Ammi Phillips during her portrait paintings career of over fifty years. The detailed work on her daughter’s red dress and her veil is marvellous, showing the painter’s personal taste. This artwork stands out from others because the little girl looks directly at its audience, which creates a visual connection between the little girl and her audience. I believe this painting also shows the love and bond between family members, which reminds me of the importance of family values.

Artist: Berthe Morisot
Title: The Cradle
Year created: 1872
Medium: Oil on canvas

1. What makes this piece beautiful to my eye is the emotions it brings me. This piece is aesthetically pleasing to see in my eyes. I love the colors the artists used as well. The colors give a sense of purity and is verging calming to see.The more I keep observing this piece I get a different emotion. At first glance it was joy. The joy of being a mother, and she is admiring her baby. I see the love she has for her baby. I also see that she looks tired. This could also share a story about how difficult being a mother is or the challenges mothers go through. I believe this piece connects people. You don't have to necessarily be a mother to relate to this piece. As the oldest daughter, I've seen myself like this when my younger siblings were born. I was the only child for a while and it was kinda amazingly weird to see that this baby is now my family.

2. I chose this picture out of all because it's different from most artworks I'm used to seeing. It caught my attention. This painting can be interpreted in so many ways and that is the beauty of it. I love how simple the painting is but yet says so much. I think people who are mothers could relate to this painting. I'm not a mother, but as an older sibling this makes me think back to when my younger sibling was born. The age gap between my siblings and I is pretty big, it's 12 years.

In my search, I found many of the crucifixion of Jesus, but a majority had multiple people in the surroundings. I really liked that this artwork just has this as its main focus. I also liked that the sky lightens up when it's at the head of Jesus. I believe that adds a sense of hope. I also like the little details the artist added, which is the skull. This skull could symbolize death, which as many know happens and then the resurrection. The story that is being said here is exactly what the title is. Mary is at the feet of Jesus and is on her knees crying. The emotions that are being expressed from this piece is sadness.

2. I had an idea of what type of picture, this one was just the right one. I really like that the emphasis of this painting is both Mary and Jesus. I was raised in a Christias household, so I saw this all the time in both pictures or verbally. This piece made me think back on my childhood. This was one of the first stories I ever heard of Jesus, so this piece was really beautiful to me.

The emotions I felt while looking at this artwork was tranquility. I think this piece could reflect on our everyday lives. She seems to be looking out her window, possibly enjoying the view. The purpose of this artwork is probably just to show us her everyday life.

2.I found a similar piece where a woman was looking out her window, this one stood a lot more to me. This stood out to me because of the color and I really liked the details the artist added such as the view outside the window, the inside of her room, and the flowers. I also liked the amount of flowers being used, he adds them in her hair and she even holds one of them. This piece relates to a lot of the artwork I usually like seeing. I feel like I can see myself in her. Looking at this piece we can all interpret a different opinion of how she is feeling. In my eyes she looks happy but yet sad at the same time. The style of this artwork is very calming to look at. I think that's because of the colors being used, the variety of different shades of pink. Does it express an emotion or belief that you want to share? Does it serve to unify or connect us? Does it tell a story and if so, what story?

I think I find this art piece beautiful because of the colors and how soft it looks. It makes me feel comfortable and relaxed. It makes me think about picnics on a nice sunny day with the perfect amount of wind, shade, and sun ratio. It makes me feel at ease and comfortable, like I'm with someone that knows me and understands me. I feel like it could be a happy story, but I also think that it could also give off a bad story. In my head, I initially felt comforted and I thought happy thoughts, though I can see a scary and sad story as well. When I look closly at the water it looks like it is moving it has some sort of movement to it and I can also see that there are some dark points in the piece. It makes me think about death and how we have to move on. This is because of the slight current the water has that can't be changed. The bottom, represents loss and we are the lilies in the water which is life.

Why did you choose it among all others? How do you relate with this artwork?

I chose it because it just looked aesthetically pleasing to me. I love the soft colors and the lilies. I think its cute and right away when I looked at it I thought "cute", so I picked it. In a good way I think it reminds me of happy days. It reminds me of the good days that should be cheerished. But when I think even deeper I find that I also reminds me of moving on. When I see the water moving and the lilies moving with it, I can't helps but think about moving on. I feel like in my life I can relate to that a lot. Its really hard for mw to let go sometimes. Whether it be bad or good, its hard to forget something that has effected you so much, but this piece is telling me to go with the flow, so I wil.

Does it express an emotion or belief that you want to share? Does it serve to unify or connect us? Does it tell a story and if so, what story?

I think this piece it beautiful because of how clean it looks. It also looks real because of the shadowing and highlilghts. Right away from this piece I thought to dreams. I thought to creativity and happiness. I think the story it tells is to dream and use your time wisely. There is a mirror, clock, and a train coming out of a wall. I feel like the mirror is a symbol or you give what you receive, and that that you are want you want to be. The clock represents time..., and its there at the front of the mirror to remind you how much time you have left, maybe in life? I think the train represents dreams and a way for our dreams to transport to us. Its the transportation system all of our imaginations and dreams take to come to us and for us to use because life is short. You should do what you want and be happy.

Why did you choose it among all others? I relate to this work because I feel like I constantly have to remind myself that life should be fun and we literally live on a floating rock. Everyone, including me, is always so stressed about some much. A lot of people are sad, deressed, stressed out, when we should be having fun and doing things we enjoy doing. Out life is short on this Earth, I dont wan't to be spending it dreading what I spent my time on. I don't want to regret not going for it when I'm old and unable to anymore. The time is now.

It expresses family. I don't full know how to explain that it gives off family vibes, but it does. I think the feel of it, the tone, colors, and placements of it all reminds me of home. I feel like the story behind this is there is a family and they needed to go do something but they were running late, so they had to leave quickly and forgot to close the door. I also feel like it could represent something much bigger than that. I just noticed the open door could mean something else and the whole room could mean a whole other thing. What makes this artwork beautiful to the eye is that it is located in a rehearsal room. This image tells a story similar to one of my classes I take here at San Jose city college (kin pe basketball). While examination it is clear that the ballerinas and their mothers show some sort of "attitude". These facial expressions and the environment overall can be connected to a non-dance classroom setting. The story that this artwork tells is that in a dance room located in the old Paris Opera is holding a ballet rehearsal. Jules Perrot who is a famous ballet master is conducting a ballet class. The 24 women ballerinas and their mothers watch another dancer executes her dance.

I chose it among all the others was because of how similar location. To me, this art is special because my eyes stopped at the face region where only two eyes are opened with three winkles at the end of the eyes. To continue, everything on this mask is symmetrical to others such as two small humans on both sides, the triangle pine helped created the shape of the mask, many straight-line were symmetrical, it’s used to decorate the hair regions, and two horns behind her head. Moreover, I love the winkle at the end of the mask which indicated for people who wear these masks were an older generation and I feel the respected, powerful, and mysterious person behind the mask. Lastly, the mask tells me that people who wear this mask will have three big-circle rings on their neck, and the reason why I know is not only because of these three rings on the mask but this detail also appear on two small humans on both sides on the head.

Next, I moved my eyes upper a little, I saw many naked ladies behind which help me understand what is his dreams and why he has to cover his eyes. I like this art because of its colors, and I think because of this color makes the painting less dark since the purpose of the art was a sin. The purpose of this artwork is to show how beautiful South Africa is. The warm colors used in the painting give a peaceful feel. Nature is supposed to be peaceful and full of adventure. When I first saw this picture, it made me want to go there. Just to be able to walk through the trees and feel at peace with the nature around me. I think this artwork is supposed to connect us to the outdoors and really look at the beauty of it.

2. I chose this painting because I love nature. When I'm ever feeling sad or stressed I go on a bike ride, walk, or hike on the nature trails near my house. The beauty of nature is that it's so peaceful and quiet but not. You get to hear the sounds of animals and trees swaying in the wind which makes me feel in the moment. This painting to me shows the peacefulness of nature and all that it can show us about ourselves. It allows you to not have to hear loud noise and just think with no distractions.

This artwork is representing the 16th-Century Spanish friar John of the Cross. The triangle represented by the cross is showing the reference to the Holy Trinity and that all things exist in three. This artwork is just overall beautiful to look at and that's what caught my eye. The expression in this piece is showing so many different things that make it that more meaningful.

2. I chose this piece because I loved how much detail the artist put in. Not only was the artwork amazing but the meaning of Christ and how the artist viewed it really made me intrigued. I can relate to it because I do believe in the cross and I wear one everyday.

Artist: Edgar Degas
Title: The Dance Class
Year created: 1874
Medium: Oil painting

1. This picture was really nice to look at. It's a picture of ballerinas and their mothers waiting for rehearsal. I not a dancer but I've always said that dance is the best form of art to express emotion. In this picture the artist is capturing that meaning as well as painting it. The one girl in the middle stood out to me because the emotion that she's showing through her dance makes me feel happy and is showing that she's enjoying what she's doing.

2. I chose this piece because I love dance and what it represents. As said before, I've never taken any dance classes but I still love to do it when I go out with friends or even by myself. I think it allows you to feel your emotions and express them rather through words. The painting made the dance class look so realistic which I though was beautiful.

The purpose of this artwork was what the marine artist is experiencing on his voyage in Greenland. His story is based on the polar bear in the painting. As the coasted along the shore of Greenland, they wanted to hunt the bear but in a split second the bear was able to take off before they could even reach shore. And these were the artist final days at Greenland.
2. The reason why I chose this painting was because it reminded me of where I live. I live along the pacific coast and always see steamer boats from along the shore. Of course there’s no polar bears but the fact that our mountains in Santa Cruz hold a large population of animals makes me relate to the painting.

To my eyes, what makes it beautiful is the natural beauty in a woman without makeup or any of the nowadays vanities. Long hair has always been a symbol of beauty, and the woman in the painting has gorgeous red long hair.
I chose this artwork because it seems so natural, and all the flowers around with the color palette make it calm and romantic. The way the artist managed to create the focal point be the edges of the canvas makes it so unique from others and looks very creative. Also how there are no hard lines and the soft edges make the entire piece look like a dream that came straight from the creators mind. To me this expresses and emotion of triumph over difficult times. According to The Met this is meant to tell the story of Apollo before he goes across the sky and the characters on the edges are deities with the sun god in the middle.
2. I chose this above others for the sake of beauty because on first glance it gave me a sense of warriors overcoming something difficult. In a way this relates to me because I feel like that is something I have always strived for and I think we all should.

What makes this painting beautiful to my eyes is the place. It expresses a calm and beautiful sunny day at the beach with a cloudy sky. The artist painted what he was looking at while enjoying time with his family. It serves to connect us with that peaceful place. The sound of the waves is relaxing, and with this painting, I can visualize myself at the beach. I choose this painting because it represents what I love and where I find inner peace every time I feel desperate. Every single element of this artwork makes it so pleasant to look at.

The purpose of this artwork is that it was created for the Collegiate Church of Saint-Etienne and represents a transition from Romanesque to Gothic Style. One aspect that makes this piece beautiful in my eyes is the color portrayed and it being symmetrical. Glasswork has always caught my eye and the fact that this was created in the twelfth century is truly incredible. I have never been in a religion so it does not express a belief I would like to share. However I do believe it was made in order to unify and connect those in the church and serve as a way to assist in bringing newcomers. It is meant to tell a story of angels.
2. I chose this piece as art for the sake of expression because it seems to express a very spiritual and religious story behind it, especially because it was made for a church and depicts angels. I relate to this artwork because it is about a higher calling and meaning to life which is very powerful and hopefully one day I can find that.

This artwork is meant to portray death and is aimed to get viewers to think about death. This piece is beautiful to me because it is about an important part of life that we all must go through. It expresses that death is immanent and dark. In a way it could serve as a way to connect us because it is something that everyone has to endure, and may be a reminder that while alive to live to our full potential.
2. I chose this as art for personal taste because the darkness and realness really stands out and feels closer to real life than other fictional stories portrayed by other pieces. I find this beautiful for its sincere and honest presentation of the characters and the relaxing atmosphere it gives out. Yes, it does give the emotions of positivity that soothe you into content and gives a feeling of feeling like you're at the moment of this artwork. The characters have a form of unification as they are shown to be enjoying themselves at the suburban park and entends this feeling to the viewers as a part of the piece. It tells a story of a popular retreat for the middle and upper-class individuals in the scene and of them enjoying themselves.

2. I chose this among other pieces of Georges's art as it uses a variety of colors along with a comfortable display of a pleasant group party with no exaggerations of shapes or forms. I find it beautiful how welcoming the characters show concern and care for each other and how there is a peaceful afterlife with both soul and body. Yes, this artwork gives the belief the heavens bring both the soul and body altogether to the high heavens instead of only taking the soul. It gives unity of there being a destined afterlife that carries you completely and not only the spiritual aspect of yourself. It gives the story of being welcomed into the afterlife with singing angels and important figures like Jesus Christ with the Virgin Mary taking you to paradise.

I picked this artwork as it shows that assumptions can get exaggerated to be more than what can be considered easily in human capabilities and the religion of the bible had enlarged this to elevate the virgin mary to the angelic position. I can relate to this as my assumptions can have a strong influence on the image of the scenario of the subject as the artist made it as though the Virgin Mary is ascending to the heavens.

I find this beautiful with the combination of colors and the close realism to throw the waves from 2d to 3d if looked long enough. I believe that the artwork gives the belief of important change to Japanese society bringing foreign influence. The unity of the artwork is of japan itself and the boats being the people and the Great Wave being outside change. The artwork gives this story of Japan's uncertainty and insecurity from its isolation to accepting trade with the rest of the outside world.

I selected this artwork over others for how it represents Japan’s particular art style and how it shows Mount Fuji, a place of special importance to the Japanese. How I can relate to this is how wild the waves are to the humans’ boats represents how I have an internal conflict to maintain control against lashing out in a burst of energy like the waves does to the boats with the mountain being my patience.

However, the tool and the soap water have been made readily and sale at many stores, so nowadays’ kids do not need to do the steps of mixing soap up with water and find the tube by themselves to blow into bubbles. To my generation kids, we ourselves must find the materials, mix them up and look for the stems of papaya leaves from the garden or even go to neighbors’ garden to ask for it and use as the tube. This image expresses the emotion of the author, and my emotion to this game as well.

I chose this artwork since this is very close to what was going on in my childhood. The way the flowers hug her and she is surrendering to the flowers is so beautiful. I love the lines that are falling. It feels like its raining tiger lilies and she loves it. Being connected to nature is a beautiful thing.

Author: Eugene Berman
Title: Bella Venezia
Year: 1945
Material: Oil on Canvas

We learned that beauty is broadly intellectually as well as an individual emotional response. Producing responses of pleasure or provoking other emotions as well. I feel the aim of this piece is to provoke emotional responses on various levels. When I first observed this piece I seen beauty, due to the complexity and dynamics of all that I see. The colors and the small shapes and etchings in the negative space and within the art piece. I enjoy how this artist played with abstract art within the shapes of the building and the colors being manipulated on the ground. It provokes emotions of satisfaction due to the colors and also sorrow due to the people hurt at the bottom of the piece. It’s unexpected to see them injured or burdened but there they are isolated and still within this work. I feel it connects us because we all can relate to seeing misery in a world we paint out to be miraculous. I don’t feel this piece is unified or expresses a story that I can see other then the rhythm of the lines and work draws your eyes to the top of the painting to the bottom. I choose this piece over all the others because I see beauty in what looks like a disaster and saturated colors which also why I can relate because that is how I see the world.

Author: Pablo Picasso
Title: The Old Guitarist
Year: late 1903 early 1904
Material: Oil on a Panel

One thing we learned about art for the sake of expression is philosophical art illustrates concepts and beliefs of great importance to an artist. From our book intro to art it shares how art contributes honesty in art. That is why I adore this painting. This piece aims to shine light on the honesty of poverty, it definitely evokes a lot of emotions married to beauty. I believe Picasso beliefs on poverty and the difference between rich and poor and how it felt to be in a poor position was desperately attempted to be conveyed and I confirm it did in my eyes. There’s so much unity illustrated in this piece with his viewers who can relate to this stand point and how the colors of melancholy the sadness being represented in his figures stature was achieved. What’s beautiful about this art is the colors and the feelings I can feel illuminating from the canvas of sorrow and pain amazing how it is poured out in the overall piece you can feel his sad energy through his soft strokes. And the contrast of color highlights of whites. The way his head is curved all the way in his chest as deep as it can go to express his longing pain. How he emphasized the character by having his subject take up all the space within the art leaving little outside space. It express a belief that poverty should be considered so unacceptable. It definitely tells a story of a man experiencing shame and lack of hope.

Author: Rembrandt Van Rijn
Title: Cottage near the entrance of the woods
Date: 1644
Material: Pen and Inks

It’s hard to believe this art piece was done with pens and inks it’s magnificent to me because I feel the stillness of the subject in the woods and enjoy how the lines where played with carelessly yet intentionally. I feel there is emphases on the cabin itself and it’s location and still the ability to see the figure in the door as if he/she is waiting for someone tells a romantic story to me. I feel this piece aims to express beauty from the artist that solitude is important. This art work expresses a belief and longing to desire to be detached from the way our world operates today based of social and systematic beliefs and in a more seclusion. I’m sure something we all can connect and relate to. I choose this art piece because I feel And noticed a pattern that I’m gravitated to pencil and line work it attracts me because I’m amazed at one can be done with lines and little materials.

Artist’s name: unknown

Marble column from the Temple of Artemis at Sardis

Ca 300BC

Marble

I love Ancient Greek and Roman art. The first time I went to the Met in 1999, the gigantic beautiful marble column caught my eyes as soon as I walked into the hall. I didn’t know much about the classic order, I didn't know its an ionic style column, but I love the design on the top of the column, how it looked like the inside of a shell. I also like to read Greek mythology. I could see the gods, goddesses and all the other people and animals running, loving, and dying in between all the beautiful marble columns. When I finally went to Europe in 2004, I saw the Parthenon Sculptures in The British Museum, I could not believe how many people it took and how hard it was to make all the marble temples and structures in 300 BC. I like the Marble column of the Temple of Artemis so much, I wish I could have a column of it in my house. I saw some mansions in Palo Alto and Willow Glen that resemble the ancient Greek style, not to mention all the other famous buildings in Paris, New York or Rome. After thousands of years, the ancient Greek art is still in our lives.

I love it so much that I designed my bathroom based on islamic style. I don’t know why I am so attracted to Islamic art, but when I took an islamic art class in college, the interests grew stronger. I guess it is because my favorite color is blue and blue is a popular color in islamic art. Also, the islamic world is in in the middle of Europe and Asia, thus both cultures had influence over Islamic world. We all know that Judaism is the mother of christianity and Islam, however, all three religions are very different, therefore, many conflicts throughout history. From the Crusades to ISIS, the three religions caused many historical events and still affect people around the world.

When we visit New York City in 2019, the ticket for the Met was valid for three consecutive days. As an art lover, this is the best thing ever. We spent a lot of time seeing almost everything we wanted to see. I spent many hours looking at the islamic arts. It used to be many long names of different islamic dynasties and complex islamic architectures became beautiful pieces of artwork in front of me. According to the Met website, the Mihrab is the niche that indicates the direction of Mecca, towards which muslim pray five times a day. Therefore, the Mihrab is a very important to muslims. Isfahan is an important city in Iran, which used to be called half of the world. This is on my must visit list and I hope I can see the city with my own eyes some day.

What is the purpose or aim of this artwork? This sculpture tells us a story. The California Gold Rush in 1848 inspired this artist to create this marble carved figure holding a divining rod, or miner’s wand. In her other hand a wreath of thorns sitting on a big structural support made to look like a chunk of quartz. Gold is often found next to quartz and there is a moral behind the wreath of thorns. The aim of this artwork or moral is "all that glitters is not gold".

Why did you choose it among all others?
