This holiday honors indigenous peoples who are from the United States. It honors those who originally lived on our land.

Students will first watch this video about what Indigenous Peoples Day is: https://youtu.be/fp34B81yMos?si=S25cRlLSN-q_rnx4

Then, we will talk about what a land acknowledgement is and why they are important. Students will use this website to find out which native lands we are located on: https://native-land.ca/

Finally, students will engage in a research project to research one of the tribes from our land. Students will do a jigsaw to learn about the other tribes they did not research.

You could continue this into future weeks by having kids run for classroom jobs and need to be elected for those jobs.

Women's History Month: all month long

Students will spend the first few weeks of the month learning about different women who had significant impacts. See lesson plan ideas here: https://www.womenshistory.org/students-educators/digital-classroom-resources

Then, students will talk about what they know about the national anthem and what they want to know.

Students will receive a copy of the lyrics to the national anthem and will follow along as they listen to it. https://youtu.be/uAYKTMQl7MQ?si=cBUosYZjCsqXZ5Ok&t=43

We will then go through each of the lyrics and talk about what they mean. We will connect to state standards relating to taking pride in your country and talk about what it means to take pride in your country.

Students will end with a writing exercise about what the national anthem means to them. If students are not from the US but connect to a different country, they can still answer this question but in relation to their own country.

This is a holiday that celebrates the end of Ramadan in the Islamic faith. During Ramadan, people fast all day, so people break their fast during this celebration!

If there's time, students could compare and contrast a celebration from their religion or a tradition they have at home with Ramadan and Eih al Fitr. Students can then share their observations with other students.

Younger reading level (older kids still can enjoy picture books), but I like this book because it also mentions families celebrating this tradition in the U.S. It can open up conversation about how many different cultures we have here, and how we can support others in their holidays and traditions.
