Post here an image of a famous 2D artwork (think photographs and paintings). Insert a description for your image that IDENTIFIES, DESCRIBES and EXPLAINS the use of pictorial depth cues. Ensure that you include at least 3 of linear perspective, interposition, texture gradient, relative size and height in the visual field. Good luck!

Van Gogh's Scream artwork uses the pictorial cue of linear perspective, as seen in the receding railings situated behind the subject. There is also use of relative size, as you can assume that the person is larger than the wooden post in the background. Interposition is also used to express that the person is in front of the railing, and hence closer to the viewer.

Relative size, the apparent decreasing size of objects similarly sized in reality, is used to show that the people, carriage and building in the background are further away from the viewer; height in the visual field also helps to achieve this as items further back are painted higher. Interposition, the overlap of closer objects over those further away, shows that the couple in the foreground are closer to the viewer than the lamppost, as the man’s right arm is in front of the post. Texture gradient is also shown in the decreasing clarity of the road’s texture as it recedes into the distance. (Grace Osmond)

Leonid Afremov’s Colours of My Past uses the pictorial cue of linear perspective, linear perspective is the apparent convergence of parallel lines as they recede unto distance as seen in the path receding into the distance, thus allowing us to perceive the road as going further away into the distance. The pictorial cue texture gradient, which is the gradual reduction of detail that occurs in a surface as it reduces into the distance compared to a surface that is close and perceived in fine detail as shown through the gradual reduction in detail in the trees, allowing us to perceive the trees as becoming further away from us. The pictorial cue relative size is the tendency to visually perceive the object that produces the largest image on the retina as being closer, and the object that produces the smallest image in the retina as being further away and it is portrayed through the bench being larger than the person and hence allowing us to perceive the bench as being close towards us than the person is.
