They were super religious people who believed in things like a theocratic government, total depravity, and predestination. They also went to war with the Native Americans frequently. The reason the Puritans were so worried about having witchcraft, or works of the devil in their village is because of their very religious background. The girls started acting weird and the reverend noticed. When the girls were questioned they gave the town names of people who could have cast spells on them, or people who do witchcraft. This lead to a long period of time where people could accuse anyone of being a witch and the village officials would either kill them or put them in jail. The play is about the Salem Witch Trials in the 1600's. At first the play was a huge flop, and some critiques even hated it. As time went on the play has developed into one of the best plays of all time and is known by many people. They soon began to act weird and the people of the village became aware. When they were questioned about their odd behavior they gave a list of names of women who might have cast spells on them, or were doing witchcraft at the time. The girls often were showing signs of possession during the trials like mocking the person on stand, screaming, or randomly saying they were very cold and when people would feel their skin they would actually be ice cold. He would list a name of people on stand and accuse them of being a communist, which at the time was seen as a huge offence. He called Arthur Miller a communist once but what separated Miller and the other people that were accused was that Miller decided to stand up against Joe McCarthy. He denied being a communist and refused to give names of people who were thought to be communists.
