Dave was beaten so badly but still managed to overcome it and make a life for himself.

Summary- A little boy (Dave Pelzer) tells the story of how his mother would starve, abuse, humiliate and use him as a slave. He lives with his two brothers, dad and mom. They either take part in it or stand by and watch. Dave does not say anything to anyone until one day when the police get involved.

If there was one more chapter in this book, there would be a lot going on. In the end of the book, Dave is taken by the police and put in foster care. Then the book ends. There is another book in the series in which his life during and after foster care is explained. In the extra last chapter, Dave would have gotten to foster care and been settling down in his new temporary home. After he gets to his new foster home, the next chapter would have showed and went into more details on his journey into foster care.

The end of the book is laid out perfect. For most of the book Dave is abused and his family just sits back and watches. When the police get involved Dave is taken to foster care. The book ends there. The whole book the reader is wondering how his life is going to turn out, is he going to die in this house or is he going to run away. There are so many questions in the book. The ending provides readers with some sort of relief in which knowing that Dave is leaving his house. The ending is also a cliffhanger. The reader wants to know what else happens in his life so therefor the reader wants to read more.

In the book Dave is "accidentally" stabbed by his mother. She did not even take him to a hospital. Even though this is not a big part of the story, I thought it was very important. This even shows how far Dave's mother will go to torture Dave and how inhuman she really is.
