Jocelyn Solorzano

OC1

Current events June 7th

June 7 , 2018

On June 5th 2018, just 20 hours ago at 7:29 pm, eight states held Primary Elections. The results of the election will play a big role in whether or not the Republicans can defend their congressional majorities and stop Democrats from flipping the 23 seats needed to take the house. California , New Jersey and Iowa will be the main states needed to decide whether or not the democrats will win the house majority. NBC News has not yet projected the two general election participants in the California swing districts, early results suggest Democrats could get a candidate into all of their targeted House general elections in the state. For the election the three main states needed to decide who will win plus a couple more that have a say have people from the Republican and Democrat side. But to what it seems to look like is that there is more people on the Democrat side than there is on the Republican side from majority of the states listed.

This article influences mainly the people who are part of the house and the government itself as well as the people . This is because since they are deciding what type of government it will be. Some of the people in those states might not be on the Republican side and some might not be on the Democrat side. It just all depends on how everyone deals with who wins the election and the majority of what the people/ House sides with.

 			Work cited :

Pramuk, Jacob. “Democrats Appear to Have Avoided Their Worst Fears in a Critical Slate of Primaries.” CNBC, CNBC, 6 June 2018, www.cnbc.com/2018/06/05/primary-election-results-in-california-new-jersey-iowa-and-montana.html

Jocelyn Solorzano

OC1

Current events June 11th

June 11 , 2018

A rebellion by moderate House Republicans to force an immigration vote is widely expected to succeed during this week . It’s pushing members in at least one chamber of Congress to address one of the most talked about topics in American politics. The final congressional signatures are likely to be added to a proposal within the next 36 hours that would bypass the wishes of House Speaker Paul Ryan and his deputies and ensure moderates a vote on immigration throughout the month. The House Republican infighting on this issue highlights how divisive immigration is to Republicans in Congress, particularly on questions of whether to support a pathway to citizenship for some undocumented immigrants as well as what to pair with it beyond a border wall, including substantial changes to the legal immigration system. The petition has been steadily picking up signatures since it was brought up in early May, and stands just three members away from success. Only one Democrat has already signed, meaning at least two of those signatures will need to be more Republicans. The petition would ensure votes on four bills to address the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, that is protecting young undocumented immigrants who came to the US as children and President Donald Trump as ended, with the bills ranging from the most liberal to most conservative.

My thought on this article is while i was reading i was a but confused because there was some words i could not understand and some things i was just confused but i kept rereading and then i understood. This article influences young kids and teens and a majority of families. Little kids don’t really understand what is going on so for people to try to separate them from there families it is unfair. Most parents just want so much more for their kids and family and they can not do they if they keep trying to separate them for no good reason .

Work cited : Kopan, Tal, and Lauren Fox. “House DACA Talks Prepare to Enter New High-Stakes Stage.” CNN, Cable News Network, 11 June 2018, www.cnn.com/2018/06/11/politics/daca-congress-discharge-petition-immigration/index.html.

The meetings come as the former president charts his future political life and evaluates how he can help the best he can , a Democratic Party that is currently working on , how to run with President Donald Trump in the White House. In the past some Democrats accused Obama of neglecting the Democratic Party apparatus while in the White House. People close to the former president argue that he is fully invested in the future of the party and the bench of talent looking to run on 2020.

This article affects the Democratic party because they have to be part of the decision making on what they want and if they want him to run again. They also have other choices to make before considering him as a candidate. This article also affects the people because half of the people want Obama to be president again and of course some do not . The latest example of the party turning to women to unseat vulnerable Republicans in the President Donald Trump era. Tuesday, three women -- Elaine Luria, Abigail Spanberger and Jennifer Wexton -- won Democratic primaries. Earlier during this year at the party convention, journalist Leslie Cockburn won the nomination in Virginia's 5th Congressional District."Women have been leading the resistance, leading in activism and come November they will lead the way in Democrats taking back the House," said Christina Reynolds. A record number of Democratic women have filed to run for Congress since Trump stepped into the White House . After last week's primaries in California, Alabama, Iowa and other states, 114 women have won their primary elections.

This article was pretty interesting to read because compared to other articles, this one shows that women have a say in politics and have been doing a good job if majority of them continue to win . The article influences women and the girl candidates themselves because it shows how far women have come and that they have a voice. As for the candidates it shows that they can be able to run against a guy and still win , not only in virgina but in other places as well.

        			Work cited

Merica, Dan. “Democratic Women Win Big in Key Virginia House Primaries.” CNN, Cable News Network, 13 June 2018, www.cnn.com/2018/06/12/politics/democrats-women-virginia-house-races/index.html.

According to attendees and people briefed on the exchange , Corker (R-Tenn.) has been on a rampage this week over the Senate GOP’s reluctance to vote on his amendment. In a private party during lunch on Wednesday, as most Republicans blamed Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) for blocking amendments to a defense bill. The South Carolina senator, who has argued Republicans should give Trump room to negotiate on trade, unloaded on Corker. House Republican leaders sidestepped an insurrection last week. The GOP brass forestalled a potential takeover of the House floor by a coalition of 20-plus Republicans and all 193 House Democrats. The special parliamentary gambit would have forced the House to debate a series of immigration bills later this month. On Thursday, the Republican leadership released details and text of the "Border Security and Immigration Reform Act." The plan allots $25 billion to construct Trump’s border wall, ends the so-called "catch and release" program and allows the DACA population to apply for what’s termed as "six-year indefinitely renewable contingent non-immigrant status." Republicans planned to pair a debate and vote on the new leadership measure .There's no bill which will pass. Thus, nothing can become law. A lot of Republicans truly don't want to tangle with immigration policy before the midterms, no matter what's going on at the border. A vote against any immigration plan is a good vote in many conservative Congressional districts. Tuesday's meeting is about the president pushing to construct his border wall and House Republicans waiting to move until they hear directly from him.

This article influences the house and people who are immigrants and people

that are involved with DACA. It influences the house because trump wants to build the wall and the republicans and democrats think its a bad idea. It influences immigrants and people that with DACA because they are waiting for the house to make a decision , and when they do decide they will either be able to stay or go . If they stay they can stay with their families , and if they go they will be apart from their families . As for the DACA people they can go through the same thing . In my opinion i think trump is dumb for wanting to build the wall because majority of the united states is filled with immigrants .

		Work cited :

Pergram, Chad. “Trump to Huddle with House GOP on Immigration, Border Security.” Fox News, FOX News Network, 17 June 2018, www.foxnews.com/politics/2018/06/17/trump-to-huddle-with-house-gop-on-immigration-border-security.html.

The two Cabinet members defended the policy, which has seen nearly 2,000 children separated from their families since Sessions issued his "zero tolerance" directive in April. Sessions authored an April 6 memorandum directing U.S. attorneys "to adopt a policy to prosecute all" such violations "to the extent practicable." In the six weeks following that order, 1,995 children had been separated from their parents.White House immigration policy advisor Stephen Miller, for example, recently told The New York Times: "It was a simple decision by the administration to have a zero tolerance policy for illegal entry, period. The message is that no one is exempt from immigration law. On Thursday, Sessions explained that "our policies that can result in short-term separation of families is not unusual or unjustified.""This administration has a simple message: If you cross the border illegally, we will prosecute you. If you make a false immigration claim, we will prosecute you. If you smuggle illegal aliens across an extraordinarily dangerous journey, we will prosecute you," she said. President Donald Trump echoed that pugnacious tone in remarks at the White House ,After again blaming Democrats for the policy itself, Trump vowed that "the United States will not be a migrant camp ... not on my watch."

The article itself just makes me mad due to the fact that trump is trying to separate families from each other . He is taking small children away from their parents just because he feels like it and it is not fair . This makes a lot of people angry due to the fact that half the population came to the united states as immigrants.

			Work cited ;

Breuninger, Kevin. “Jeff Sessions and Kirstjen Nielsen Defend Trump's 'Zero Tolerance' Immigration Policy.” CNBC, CNBC, 18 June 2018, www.cnbc.com/2018/06/18/sessions-and-nielsen-defend-trumps-zero-tolerance-immigration-policy.html.

The move comes just three days after the president enacted an initial $50 billion in imports .That would be taxed an additional 25 percent, which he said was punishment for the theft of intellectual property from U.S. companies, as well as the trade gap between the two countries. China announced its own tariffs on American goods, including a wide range of seafood and agricultural products, many cars and trucks, petrochemicals and an array of medical equipment. Trump threatened to continue the economic escalation, saying that if China retaliates against the second round of tariffs, then more would be imposed.

This article affects the trade between America and China . If Trump threatens to put tariffs on them they aren’t going to want to trade and they will lose goods from both China and America . In the article itself says it hurts the US , which means trump causing this whole thing is for nothing . In my opinion this article was not interesting but not boring it was more like why would Trump do something that would just end up hurting the United States instead of helping it get better .

			Work cited

Hopkins, Christopher Dean. “Trump Threatens Tariffs On $200 Billion Of Chinese Goods.” NPR, NPR, 19 June 2018, www.npr.org/2018/06/18/621227483/trump-asks-for-200-billion-more-in-tariffs-to-impose-on-china.

Jocelyn Solorzano

OC1

Current events June 25th

June 25, 2018

It’s decision time for the U.S. Supreme Court, which has a plate full of issues before it: immigration, religious freedom and voter rights. In a test of free speech and religious freedom, the Supreme Court took up a case focused on whether a business owner has to create a product that is against his or her deeply-held religious beliefs regarding marriage. A owner refused to make a cake for a gay couples marriage, the Supreme Court ruled that the Colorado Civil Rights Commission violated Phillips' rights under the First Amendment. However, in its limited ruling, the Supreme Court did not decide on the big issue: whether a business can refuse to serve gay and lesbian people. Another test of religious freedom before the Supreme Court comes with National Institute of Family and Life Advocates v. Becerra. In this case there who went to a pregnancy center who gave the family options on what to do with the baby .President Thomas Glessner has argued that the law requires anti-abortion centers to be “advertising for abortion.” Along with other issues the Supreme Court has a lot to think about and how to deal with every issue . They have to think about the people and the laws that have been passes .

This article is not confusing but interesting because there are a lot of issues going on that the Supreme Court have to consider and fix and think about. But the question is how will they try to do that if we have the Bill Of Rights to keep in mind . Their decision will affect the whole population on what they decide to do and how they will deal with things .

Work cited ;

Schallhorn, Kaitlyn. “Supreme Court to Tackle Immigration, Voting Rights, Unions: A Look at Major Cases on Justices' Agenda.” Fox News, FOX News Network, 22 June 2018, www.foxnews.com/politics/2018/06/22/supreme-court-to-tackle-immigration-voting-rights-unions-look-at-major-cases-on-justices-agenda.html.

The conservative bloc under Chief Justice John Roberts has made plain that it believes states should be freer to determine their own voting maps and election practices, and concerns about race discrimination simply do not carry the weight of earlier eras. By a 5-4 vote, the court upheld Texas congressional and legislative districts that a lower court declared discriminated against Latinos. Earlier during this month , the same 5-4 lineup of Republican-appointed justices against Democratic-appointed justices affirmed an Ohio law for purging citizens from voter rolls . Monday's action comes on the exact five-year anniversary of Shelby County v. Holder, when the justices on 5-4, liberal-conservative lines rolled back a provision of the 1965 Voting Rights Act that required states with a history of racial bias to clear any redistricting or other electoral change with the Justice Department or a federal court.
The Texas case, which dated to the 2010 Census and new legislative maps, centered on districts that a lower court said denied Latinos an equal opportunity to elect candidates of their choice.

This article was interesting but yet confusing . This was because as you read what the Supreme Court does and how many things they have to deal with is crazy . The case was a clash between state efforts to provide women with facts about their medical options. First Amendment rulings that place limits on the government’s ability to compel people to say things at odds with their beliefs. Justice Clarence Thomas, writing for the five-justice conservative majority, accepted the free-speech argument, ruling that the First Amendment prohibits California from forcing the centers, which oppose abortion on religious grounds, to post notices about how to obtain the procedure. The centers seek to persuade women to choose parenting or adoption. The court returned the case to the lower courts for another look, but it seemed unlikely that California would be able to present new evidence or arguments to save the law.

This article was interesting because it shows that the Supreme Court does still go along with the first five amendments and does not let people or anyone take it away . But people did have the right to be mad due to the fact that the pregnancy centers will basically telling women what to do with their choice on whether to keep their baby or terminate their pregnancy. If the women wanted to do that she will ask .

Work cited

Liptak, Adam. “Supreme Court Backs Anti-Abortion Pregnancy Centers in Free Speech Case.” The New York Times, The New York Times, 26 June 2018

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/26/us/politics/supreme-court-crisis-pregnancy-center-abortion.html?rref=collection%2Ftimestopic%2FU.S.%20Supreme%20Court&action=click&contentCollection=timestopics&region=stream&module=stream_unit&version=latest&contentPlacement=7&pgtype=collection

Kennedy’s decided to retire, which gives President Trump the opportunity to create a solid five-member conservative majority on the Supreme Court , which is something that Republicans have sought for decades.

Although Justice Kennedy, who was appointed by President Ronald Reagan, reliably voted with the court’s conservative justices on gun rights and voting rights. He also often sided with liberals on gay rights, abortion, affirmative action and the death penalty.

The timing of his resignation , just months before the midterm elections makes the nomination of his replacement a potent rallying point for both parties. Senator Mitch McConnell, the majority leader, quickly promised a Senate vote by the fall. There will have to be a candidate search which Trump already has a couple names in mind . The candidates have to go through a background check. Basically they go through all their cases even from a couples years back . Court nominees usually visit as many senators as possible for “meet and greets” before a hearing in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee, whose current chairman is Senator Chuck Grassley, Republican of Iowa. The committee’s members, a mix of Republicans and Democrats, must agree on the format of the hearings and how many witnesses will be called.

This article was interesting to read because i understood what it was trying to put out there , but what i don’t understand is why kennedy is retiring already . This article will affect the Supreme Court , we all know they are a mixture of republican and democrats , but who is it that they have more of . If there is more people who believe in the same thing sometimes the cases may not be fair . We don’t know what is going to happen until the elections .

 				Work cited :

Zraick, Karen. “Justice Kennedy Is Retiring.
