I think that some sort of natural disaster or natural cause eroded the soil making it unable to grow anything. 
2. This soil is lacking nutrients because if it was rich in nutrients it would be able to grow some sort of plant life. 
3. In order to reverse the damage you'd probably need to hydrate the soil

This soil looks like it is dead because it is not sustaining any plant life.
What can be done is that farmers or owners of the land could install an under ground water system that can be accessed when droughts come.

  1. I think dehydration would have caused this to the soil. Droughts would cause the soil to start cracking due to how dry it is.
  2. This soil could be rich in nutrients however due to the cracks the nutrients wouldn’t be kept within the soil and would runoff to lower soil horizons
  3. Adding systems which would help with irrigation due to the lack of hydration and moisture in the soil.
  4. The warming of the Earth causes droughts everywhere in the world such as certain places in Africa, and even in developed countries such as the United States, specifically California. Thus living a greener lifestyle would be one way to help this issue.

I think the reason this happened to the soil is because there was too much planting was being occurred on that specific spot  and also its because of soil erosion due to heavy rainfall, snow etc. This soil is not rich in nutrients, its very dry and won't be able to grow crops because its low in nutrients.
To reserve this damage the soil needs to take care of the soil and provide the nutrients that is needed. To prevent this issue i can probably find ways to protect the soil such as removing the dead plant residue after the plant has died.

2. The soil looks like it is unable to sustain plant-life, so i do not believe it is rich in nutrients. 
3. You would have to install a system that would be able to moisturize the dry soil in event of a drought.
