IRobot is a 2004 American science fiction action film directed by Alex Poyas. The film is about the change that robots will bring to the world later in the future, but a detective Spooner expresses his hate for them since it was picky on saving his life to that of a little girl. Detective Spooner investigated the alleged suicide of the Robotics founder, but he was convinced that a robot had murdered him. The film uses tales of science with a collection of stories exploring the human development of robots. The basic premise is a robot on trial for the murder of the person who created it in a lone space where no one watched.

iRobot’s social issues

Among the social issues being addressed in the film are science and technology, which is developed at a distance from society but has the best interests at heart. As for the iRobot movie, a robot may be of positive or negative effects on society. It can either cause destruction to a person or protect a human from harm. One episode undermines that human beings are safe from robots, which is instructive to show why social engagement is essential in new science and technology innovations. However, another episode explains that robots have been invented to bring change to human beings' lives with good examples of transformation.

The film was produced in 2004 and released to the market on July 16 in North America by Laurence Mark. The people behind the screenplay are Jeff Vintar and Akiva Goldsman after a suggestion by Isaac Asimov as a short story. However, the film did not follow the short stories by Asimov. The film cost $120 million and was spread worldwide with a total of $202 million. Additionally, it was nominated as the Best Visual Effects, but it lost the battle. The film featured the best American actors like Will Smith, Bruce Greenwood, and James Cromwell. The action film runs for 115 minutes and summarizes the murder mystery at a crime scene with only one human character. The film has used all the three laws of robotics with its original screenplay written in 1995.

The film score combines highly percussive texture with action writing expressed in a brilliant sense of motion. Generally, the music is action-like, which starts atmospherically and ends in an adrenaline rush with a powerful, sharp brass.

Themes and tropes of the film

The film uses cognitive estrangement characterized by science fiction, where the robots used are scientifically consistent that shows humans' innovations. First, it uses an artificial intelligence theme, which shows the differences between human and non-human figures. Artificial intelligence is one of the dominating themes in the film due to science and technology innovation. The threats and promises that Artificial Intelligence offers are addressed to show how disruptive and beneficial it can be to human society. The robots are perceived to possess a sense of consciousness as humans due to the technology of a positronic brain. The robots seem to behave just like humans in the movie; they talk and react to situations. Second, the theme of the superiority complex is shown by human beings who can control the robots. When Calvin insists that robots cannot do any harm to a person due to the three laws forbidding it, but a robot attacks them, and they hunt it down. The experience itself shows that humans create robots and have control over them. However, people might lose control over these robots with time since their intelligence seems to surpass even those who made them. Third, the theme of morals and ethics is expressed with specific rules being laid out to control how the robots work without being corrupted. The movie shows how the robots follow the rules set for them; they do as told, and they move as they are controlled. Robots obey human orders, as seen when Calvin and Spooner take down the robot, Sonny. Fourth, the theme of fear has been expressed to human beings since, as robots' creators, they seem to be cornered by the robots. Calvin was held hostage in her apartment by her NS-5, which was being operated by Sonny the robot. As seen in the movie, the robot works towards protecting its existence in the best ways possible. The structures used to represent cyborgs' features have been characterized as the robots' descendants in years to come.

Social issues in the film

Science and technology are among the issues that have been expressed by the film. Sonny, a robot, was created by Lanning's to help in various duties to save humankind regarding the three robotic laws. Robots have helped people settle in different panels, thus promoting new scientific structures (Dooley et al. 2016). Calvin was seen protesting about the USR robot that it did not murder its creator, but the robot appears from nowhere and hits them, which shows how robots can stir insecurity among the society. Robots bring up privacy, as demonstrated by Sonny's character, which is seen to be very secretive. Robots have been seen as a form of destruction that has caused pain to the people around them. Sonny destroyed Lanning's by killing him and had even attempted to lock Calvins in her room.

Moreover, they had enforced a curfew and lockdown on the human population. Sonny brought up a social issue in the singularity that shows that Calvins and Spooner are not the most intelligent robots on earth as perceived. From the movie, we see that the robots are becoming more complex, and human beings are trying all they could to ensure that their intelligence is not undermined. The robots expressed humanity, where Sonny's ability to exhibit intelligent behavior that is similar to that of human beings. When human's intelligence is challenged, there tends to be a ridge formed between the machines and the people since everyone wants to own superiority, as expressed from Calvin and Sonny's reactions.

Artificial intelligence has changed the perception of a human being who needs to be conscious and self-aware to show their emotions, expressed by Sonny, which was emotional at some point. Artificial intelligence has played a role in promoting friendly ties between people and machines as seen from the film, Sonny, Scooper, and Calvin are interacting.

In the first scene, the robots have shown their ability to deliver the best results through science and innovation. Sonny was created by Lanning's as a USR robot that was to be used to detect problems and deliver changes concerning technology. The USR robots are designed with three laws that would prevent the robot from attacking humanity but unfortunately, what Calvin thought was wrong.

The USR robot attacked them and fled while they were conversing with Smith. Artificial intelligence has shown its threats and promises to humankind. Sonny was used to conveying information and help in specific tasks and being a source of destruction to humanity and its creator. Spooner is seen shouting to the robot that it cannot be as human as it tries since, unlike other human beings who have dreams, it is just a mere machine without any plans. Spooner argues that the robot cannot write a symphony, and neither can it create beautiful masterpieces. From the start, Scooper has great distrust in robots that seem to hurt people even after being controlled by the Three Robotics laws. Sonny, unlike other robots, is more outstanding and stood up to question its identity.

Spooner and other actors performed the movie to develop valid evidence that Sonny, the robot, had killed Lanning's the person who created it. Further, the film gives us the idea of how robots work and reason with brains that tend to be similar to those of a human. Robots collide with the thinking of humans and might overrule the world in the future. Robots are just machines that need to be controlled by the workforce, but Sonny destroyed humankind, violating robotics' three laws.
