Research topics in college aren't usually a matter of life and death. Even when they are, e.g. climate change or the opiod crisis, they still seem abstract.

Most of us aren't moved to act or learn unless we are personally involved (a friend overdosed, for example). A pandemic grabs everyone's attention, for the most part.

The scholarship/ research about how to treat COVID-19 becomes compelling to everyone. We all become "citizen journalists," a role that requires highly developed "information literacy" skills. (That's why journalists earn degrees!) We all generally wants answers in seconds, not even minutes, but true literacy and deep knowledge requires long-form reading and also critical thinking. We may be shocked to learn that scientists and doctors disagree with each other, or even with the WHO or CDC. Who is right? Also, has science become partisan?
