NYCDOE guidelines state, “Students must be permitted to participate in all school activities (for example, overnight field trips) in accordance with their gender identity consistently asserted at school.”  I had a gender-fluid fifth grader going on an overnight trip.  My senior field counsel said we could not create a mixed-gender sleeping space.  Consequently, the fifth grader was forced to identify a gender for a very vulnerable situation.  How can we expand policy so that we honor students who do not express a single gender choice?
