1) Existentialism was able to help students direct their own learning during discussions. They were in charge of who spoke and what questions would be asked.
Progressivism allowed educational topics to be brought up and the students voice was heard while analyzing real world experiences that they had gone through. This also allowed the teacher to see if the students learned what was being taught in the classroom.
2) Discussing topics like conformity was a topic that engaged students in a conversation on what they believed we as society conform to. Students from all different backgrounds were able to speak on how they are treated or what they feel they just conform to.
3) Teachers present to students what skills they need to be taught, offer a school environment where students can get after school tutoring to get students more involved in their important state assessments and provide feedback to students on their work.

This Learning Project focused on first, the teacher and their way of teaching. The key educational philosophies that were talked about in our text book was reflected during class time. This project also focused on ways to engage a student in learning how to discuss, write essays, and prepare for assessments. Finally, this project allowed me, as a college student to engage with other students in high school. Since I want to teach eleventh and twelfth grade, it was a perfect opportunity to see what it’s really like to be a teacher.

Challenges

Not every child is enthusiastic about coming to school and learning. They come into class ready to leave to their next class or home and it can sometimes be a challenge for the teacher when trying to teach and engage students when there is no motivation. Therefore it was up to us as interns and teachers to see how we would engage students to learn the material. It can be challenging to balance the different learning needs of all students. As I observed the classroom, it can be difficult as a teacher to move forward when a student doesn’t understand something and the rest do. However, at that moment I think the best teachers would offer the help the student needs in order to catch up with the class.

Although I knew that not all students learn the same, while doing my Service learning hours I was able to see how every child learns differently. Some students are better at working independently and others enjoy working in a group. I learned that if you allow your students to get their work done independently or in a group, or decide which way they work best, the work will get done. Students wanted to get their full points and cared about what grade they obtained. Therefore, students in groups helped each other out to finish their assignments.

Showing students that you care about their learning and that you’re willing to help them write better or read better, will make the difference. Talking to the students, they’re willing to tell you what they’re working on. I also think that in the classroom I was assigned to, Mr. M made the students feel like their say did matter and I think that, that helped students ask questions regularly. They were willing to ask the teacher and me questions.

Reflection

As the days went by I wrote reflections of the days I spent in the classroom learning and engaging with the students. I learned so much about the teaching profession. I learned that all students learn differently, different methods on how to engage students in the classroom, and how I would like to teach in my classroom. Some teachers like to teach straight from the textbook and others like to teach with different activities. In the classroom I was assigned to, I believe the activity method worked best. I learned that teaching a classroom can be a handful at times and that there will be challenges. I learned that teachers go out of their way to help students achieve their goals. Mr. M offered tutoring for his students after school and it made me see how much more teachers do. I’m glad I was able to help students in their learning because it truly made me feel like a teacher. I also realized the different styles of teaching. Finally I learned that teaching is a wonderful career because you get to help different kids from different backgrounds. Here in Orlando there is so much diversity, that every day after I did my hours, it felt very rewarding to just go into the classroom and help in anyway that I could.
