The site I most frequently recommend to my students is the Purdue OWL site. When my high school students used citation generators like Easybib, there were ALWAYS errors because they don't know what information is supposed to be included which is why I would recommend OWL rather than a citation generator. My district also uses Noodletools which does require a subscription. This is effective because it still prompts students to look for the information that they need for a correct citation so that they're not just cutting and pasting. It also links notes to the appropriate source and generates a works cited page.

I have been a huge fan of Purdue Owl for years. When I began the GSLIS program, I had never used APA format before -- Purdue Owl became my go-to when I was unsure of how to format citations in my reference list or in-text. It's also very user-friendly and easy to navigate. I've experimented with some citation generator sites (such as citation machine) but have often had to make revisions to the citations that they come up with, so I would be hesitant to recommend something like this to someone who is new to citing sources.

Purdue OWL is a free website that covers so much information with regard to citing sources, and writing in general! I have referred to this website for two years now, since I began the GSLIS program. Purdue University’s OWL website covers the APA and MLA formats for citations and references (also the Chicago Manual of Style and the American Medical Association formats). There really is a lot of information here, even advice on applying to graduate school and getting letters of recommendation. Plagiarism.org is a thorough resource about plagiarism that would be helpful to teachers and students alike.

I like it because you do have to create your citations yourself so you are learning how to do it by using the information provided, not just putting in information and getting an automatic response without really knowing how to cite sources.

My first thought was Purdue Owl to give library users research and citation resources, because it was where I first learned about MLA in high school. At the time, it was generally perceived as one of the more reputable resources. But I tend to use EasyBib if patrons (especially children and young adults) ask about research. EasyBib is user-friendly and not as verbose as Purdue. I think if we present citing sources as a simple, run-of-the-mill type of task wherein you simply plug some names into a generator, it normalizes digital citizenship and avoids a potentially intimidating or confusing discussion about the philosophy behind citing sources and instilling a fear of plagiarisim. It's like how in Worcester, we all use the same yellow city trash bags. Because they're so easy to obtain (you can get them at any grocery store, convenience store or even liquor store), it's a normal thing we all just do.

Purdue OWL is a great all around resource that has been recommended to me by my own teachers for many years, it is a great all around source for both MLA and APA which have been the styles I have made the most use of and that I have had most patrons coming in with questions about. I find that Easybib is a great introduction to citations and creating them in an easy less intimidating way.
