On listening as an art practice, and on the relationship between art and politics

The way institutions are formed and made may directly pose the common ground of listening by imposing rules or practices that impose a hierarchy to voices and who can be listened to. 

The art of conversation as a form of protest came from a disillusionment with the current mass march form of protest and to break the echo chamber or monologue type conversations happening under neoliberalism.

Most politics happen under speeches or debates not dialogic conversation. You are either spoken down on or picked apart.

-this is how it can fit in in political action

The ‘force of listening’ maybe refers to the power shift between who is speaking and who is listening. The speaker does not nessacerily always have the power in a conversation. Opening up conversation with active listening can create an environment in which the speaker relents over control and can speak feely over to the listener. 

Within art practice there is a danger of ‘depoliticising’ topics to make it purely art instead if exploring the intersection- is it possible to fully depoliticise something? (Probably not)

Listening In dialogue is an act exchange, opening yourself p to be persuaded or changed. Frightening 

They observed many sound artists and visual artists would put their work in a gallery(‘listening space’) but only speak about the effect of their work and what their intentions were rather then actually listen to what people who were engaging with listening to their work were actually saying and observing 

-same with political action, all the focus on the moment of action, the speech the march etc, and not on the noise that came before, within or after.

Listening in feminism is breaking that connection between listening as a form of passivity, as a service to men. Instead its reexplored as ‘listening in order to’ to show a movie towards action in response to speech
