This chapter gives a better picture of the society's way of thinking at the time. It is clear that segregation was very common. Mam was always made sit at the back of the bus but if she was accompanying a white child it was seen as appropriate to sit at the front. " i knew that bus drivers would let Mam sit in the front as long as i was with her". I felt a great empathy towards those discriminated at the time as i believe everyone deserves to be treated equally.

"I get upset when other people use the wrong words since its so easy for most everybody to make any sound they want". pg. 19
I could sense the frustration that Little Man was trying to express with his sentence. It doesn't seem fair to him that people who can talk chose to talk incorrectly. We are introduced to the character of Mr. Spire in this chapter. We see how hard it is for Little Man to tell Mr. Spiro his name as he tries his best to get the sounds out but ends up fainting. This scene clearly portrays the importance of not taking things for granted.

Here we see how Little Man upsets mam when he talks to Ara- T. We see a side to Ara- T that we don't like when he doesn't give Little Man his yellow knife. We also see Little Mans concern for Mrs. Worthington when a strange man opens the door. We notice how Little Man wants to see Mrs. Worthington again and when is happy when he sees her on the swing outside. His concern and caring nature is outlined again as he wants her to talk to him and hopes she is ok as she looks as white as snow. "Talking is hard for me but listening and looking when you know things aren't the way they should be can be hard on me too". pg. 53
I think personally, this quote sums up the character of little man.

Mr. Spiro teachers him a lot of life's lessons and gives him words of encouragement.
Practice what is taught and you will find your voice. It may not be the voice of your choosing but you will do well by it. Little Man exclaims how these words from Mr. Spiro give him a "fighting chance". pg. 61 Little Man is so at ease around this man that his stuttering is minimal.

In this chapter Little Man makes a shocking discovery. All of his life he has been told not to go into his parents room. However one day while they were out he went rooting in their large walk in wardrobe. When he came across a box he opened it and found his birth cert. To much of his astonishment the name beside his father was "unknown". pg. 90. This point is almost like a climax in the story and leads the reader with a cliffhanger, motivated to read on.

Reading this chapter helped me understand the society to a greater extent than before. Segregation was a very common occurrence. We see this when Little Man describes how the white children were accompanied by their coloured carers. The division was clear on the bus also. "i Knew the bus driver would let Mam sit up the front if i was with her, but that was even more stupid". I had a great empathy for the people of that time as it was not a easy period to live in.

Children with stutters can often be the victims of bullying. In this chapter there is evidence of this. Bully's always seem to pick a victim that is weaker to ensure they can overpower them. Little Man is even called the awful term "retard". It made me realise that as a teacher i have to look out for all pupils in my class, especially in the playground and ensure no one is being treated unfairly.
