I learned that all therapies, by their very nature and purpose, encourage individuals to engage in self-exploration and Self-expression through a painting, movement, or poem can recapitulate past experiences. In expressive therapy the key is not to try and understand but help the person understand and healing themselves and expressive therapies add a unique dimension to psychotherapy and counseling.

How can Music therapy can impact Autistic Patients?- Abigail Rice

I chose to explore Music as Therapy. With a deeper search into how it could be used to aid those with autism. Below is an explanation to my included visual aids:

Puzzle pieces- a common symbol along with the colors of yellow, green, blue and red used for autism awareness.

Overlapping Legs and Hands- the constant movement of an autistic motion was clearly seen in many of the videos I watched. The therapist would often use the natural motion the patient produces by their body or limbs to set the beat. And use music to help the patient learn to control the impulsive motion.

Guitar- a common instrument used because it is easy to play and you can see how the sound is being produced visually.

Squiggly line- While watching a Ted Talk led by a autistic musician. And explains when playing the bass (his instrument) this is how music appears in his mind. His mind uses visual models to make sense of music.

Tamborine- Used commonly by music therapists because of how simple it is to play.

Music notes- A decorative representation of music.

People Holding Hands- Shows the bond made by a music therapist and patient. The colors are commonly used with autism awareness.

Piano- Another instrument used typically in music therapy.

Speech Bubbles- An example of how a music can be used to practice social skills. Getting the patient to sing/speak telling their name, positive affirmation, and descriptions of themselves.

Research Question: How does music as therapy impact/help those with autism?

Cited Sources

Music therapy for Autism Spectrum Disorder, Youtube, May 15, 2020

Music Therapy for Autism Spectrum Disorder: No Effect in Randomized Trial, Youtube, May 15, 2020

Adult With Autism Shines in Music Therapy, Youtube, May 18, 2020

Music as the Window into The Autistic mind: Jonathan Chase: TedxSalem, Youtube, May 18 2020

Binaural Beats Therapy

During my research to find out how music is used in therapeutic settings, I found a newly introduced form of therapy called Binaural Beats therapy. In this form of therapy, a different frequency tone is played in each ear but the different tones are registered in the brain as the same tone. Binaural Beats therapy has five patterns currently, and one of those patterns (Theta pattern) I made a creative expression for in my picture below. The Theta pattern frequency tones ranges from 4Hz - 7Hz. This pattern helps improve meditation and creativity in a person. Another pattern, called the Delta pattern, has frequencies that range from 0.5Hz - 4Hz. This pattern helps a person reach a dreamless and deeper stage of sleep. These patterns have normally been used by people with anxiety disorders as most of the patterns deal with reducing anxiety and relaxing a person. For anyone interested in any more information about this form of therapy, here's a link to a page that explains the basics of how it works. https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/320019#how-do-binaural-beats-work
-Natalie Fullerton

Amaree’ Johnson

#6 final product

Short story title-illusion

Genre- realistic fiction

Denial
anger
bargaining
depression
and numbness
with no sight of acceptance.
As day by day goes by, Time passes and there is still no light shown.
just another inch of hope lost.
No way out, no way around it, now way above nor beneath it. Just blank walls and blank spaces.
Loneliness begins to force its way in with its nothingness Somehow becoming everything to me.
A void brings silence and with silence brings a lacked attempt to make something known.
I can’t make my emotions be known with silence. While
My negative emotions run rapid, I manage to put my focus on my old, white, iPhone headphones sitting on my dresser. I sit there for a second contemplating on what to do next. I walk over to my dresser proceeding to pick up my headphones. I think of my childhood wishing I could go back. I play my favorite childhood song, “put your records on” by Corinne Bailey Rae. I immediately feel a wave of positive nostalgia. I begin to think of my father picking me up early from pre k when I cried during nap time because I had an ear infection and to make me feel better he decided to get me a box of cookies. I remember the time my father taught me how to ride a bike without training wheels during the sunset at a park then afterwards we got ice cream. I think of the time I went to the beach excited for my father to teach me how to jump waves. I remember being upset when he told me to wait for a couple of minutes so that he could take a break from jumping waves himself. I remember being extremely petty and purposely making him feel bad about not immediately teaching me how to jump waves forcing him to Teach me anyway without any breaks. I begin to remember when my father was known for being one of the most selfless, caring, and kindness man at my elementary school. I remember when he was a father figure for some of my classmates. I began to take influence in my younger self and I feel the euphoria I once had throughout everyday life. mainly because of my father.
The song stops.
My smile slowly fades away as all those emotions I had three minutes ago start to reappear.
I remember when my childhood immediately stopped 4 years ago.
I remember my father has not been present on earth for the past 4 years.
I realize that younger influence on me was an illusion.
I realize I will never feel the way I use to.
I realize acceptance of my trauma is a fairy tail and numbness is the end result.
I realize healing is just an illusion.

https://youtu.be/7gPD7kY1amE

I walked up to this building, it is plain and white, however, the inside was nothing like the inside. I push the door open and hear the sweetest of sounds. I hear a guitar and a violin, in another room I hear a piano and accompanied by a woman with the voice of an angel. My vision is flooded with color. There are pictures and paintings everywhere, it's so colorful and the woman's singing fills me with joy. My curiosity gets the best of me and I peek in the room with the piano and the singing woman, the woman spots me and stops singing and the pianist stops playing. I panic and turn around to walk away but the woman calls out to me, “hello there you don’t have to leave would you like to join us”? I look at her and hesitate “ I don’t know how to play” I say quietly, the woman walks over to me and takes my hand, she smiles gently. I take a seat next to the pianist and I watch as she starts to play, her musi was like magic every note she played pulled at the strings in my heart, suddenly I felt tears roll down my cheek, “ I’m crying?” I thought to myself. I couldn’t seem to stop the tears, the longer I listened the easier it got to breathe. I felt as if all my pain was melting away with every note I felt safe.
