Born in 1854 in Dublin, he is considered to be one of the most important poets and authors of the Victorian Age. 
His turbulent life was marked by legal wrangles mainly caused by his sexual orientation , which had a strong influence on his works.
He led a lifestyle fuelled by alcohol, sex, drugs and excesses and this behaviour was reflected in the "Dandy", a figure which is present in many of his writings. 
He spent two years in jail because of his relationship with a man.
