Constructivism and art education go hand in hand. Constructivism says that students should be learning through experiencing the world. Art classrooms should already be learner-centered, collaborative, and include real-world tasks. Art education also involves problem solving. They go very well together!

Students could be given a project to explore mixed media. They would choose the media to explore and make a work of art with their choice of 2-3 medias. To make things easier I would present a couple themes they could choose from to narrow down ideas. Then they would have a reflection and critique their work with the class. They would learn how to combine mediums through DOING it.

As a museum curator you are given a list of artworks to include in an upcoming show. It is your job to solve how you would arrange the artwork in the museum. Would you sort them by theme? Material? Artist? Students have to create a floor plan (can be 3D or 2D) showing how they would solve this problem.
http://plpnetwork.com/2013/02/08/pbl-experts-us/

Students will need to come up with a question they have pertaining to an era or artist in history. They can check off the inquiry with the teacher. They will either need to submit a two-page research paper detailing their research and findings or create an art piece that demonstrates the answer they found.

As this article points out, an authentic activity for art students can be creating an original artwork based off of a theme. That is, after all, what artists do in real life. Students should be able to "express ideas that are personal and meaningful." This is different than having students do art exercises, because it demands creative thought.
https://www.theartofed.com/2015/08/24/4-tips-for-fostering-authentic-art-experiences-in-the-classroom/

They must read the article given to them about their specific element and draw a SMALL picture to demonstrate the concept. They will become the expert and teach this element to the other students in the following group they are put in.

So many ideas! Students could create works of art using recycled material (that could be trash) and put on an exhibition with the art to raise awareness. They could plan out and paint a giant mural in an area that is rundown. They could make ceramic soup bowls and auction them off then give the money to a soup kitchen in need.
