Questions:

• How do we use this? How do we teach kids to think for themselves?
• “Crisi-tunity” - it could be a crisis but it also provides us with opportunity to think about what we mean by assessment, how we assess, and how and what we teach 
• How can we design this into our assessment intentionally? How do we reframe the existence of the tool? 

Ways we’ve used it:

• Time saving 
  • Draft emails, revise what we’ve written
  • Write a job description  
• See it in prediction text in emails, word processing etc. 
• Enter a student paper and ask the AI to give feedback 
  • Using it for feedback - have the AI give the kids feedback 
• Write a letter to the head of school - what will we do about ChatGPT 
  • Write response to the parent letter 
• Helps inspire our creativity 
  • Write a lesson plan on….
  • Write stories just for fun 
  • Generate examples we can use with our students 
    • Examples that maybe don’t exist on the internet already and thus are not Google-able 

Positives

• Self-learning tool
  • Infinite patience with the AI - rephrase and restate until the student gets it/is happy with it 
  • Help them use what is generated by the AI and critique and improve 
  • Humanize what is generated by the computers 
• We have to be more creative in our assessments; have to be much more creative in our approach towards assessments 
  • AI can’t make the choice for you, doesn’t have the ability to complete creative assignments 

Negative

• Students use AI to complete the assignments 
  • They are doing this anyway by Googling it 
• Privacy and Safety concerns 

Suggested Uses:

• Write student performance comments
  • We would have to enter information about the students and then let the AI generate the comment 
    • There are ethical problems with this - how are we any better than the kids if we have the AI do our work for us? Aren’t we then just doing exactly what we asked them not to do? That’s an unfair approach

• How can we be sensitive to the people who will be most impacted 
  • Who are those people? 
• Need to educate students, parents, other stakeholders on the tech and help them understand it
