Introducing Text

Put the topic of the new text (may be best for NF text) in the center. Have students write what they know about the topic before they read. Have students read each others and comment, star or ask questions depending on the age. As they read, they can add new information to the chart in a different color. DOK 3

Non-fiction text

Share the topic of a passage with students. On chart, leave blank space in the middle for the passage to be added later. Ask students to list all the questions they have about the topic before they read. Glue passage in the middle. Ask students to read and annotate. Write answers to any questions they find answers to underneath the questions. Determine how to find answers to unanswered questions. DOK 3

Sorts: compare and contrast

After doing a shared reading text, pull out a section or two that provides examples of similarities and differences. Type up a few and give them to students. They can cut them out and put them on a T chart. Similarities between ___ and ______ and differences between ____ and ____. DOK 3

Fact vs. opinion

After shared reading type up facts and opinions about the topic. Students can use a simple T chart to sort if the statement is a fact from the passage or an opinion and put in the appropriate column. DOK 3

Characters

Photocopy pictures of characters from familiar IRAs or SR. Have students cut them out and put them on a T chart outlining if the character is a good character or a bad character. Details to support Main idea

Provide students with an excerpt from familiar text and the main idea. Have them reread together and create a web (with main idea in the middle) and add details to support it around the outside using evidence from the text. DOK 2

Multiple texts: 5th grade sources

After reading multiple articles, give students 5-10 statements from the articles. Have them sort them based on the source they come from and place them in the appropriate column. Could do source 1 and 2, or source 1, 2 and both. DOK 3

Shared reading: sequencing

Provide 2 printed pictures for 2 parts of the story, for example, beginning and middle. Ask group to work on drawing a sketch of an important event from the end. Depending on the level of students, you might leave one blank (end) or more than one (beginning and end) and just give middle picture. DOK 2
