Before interpreting the symbols in the poem, Anabell and I determined that the traveller, to put it bluntly, died. After reviewing the primordial symbols, our conclusion was further supported. For example, the word darkness in the beginning of stanza two represents the unknown, evil, and fear. It leaves a sense of mystery, a sort of, "what happened," kind of feeling. The sea and its "soft, white hands" represents innocence, but the surrounding darkness adds in a sense of evil and dread. The traveller gives into the darkness and goes into the sea. As the tide rises and falls, the passage of time is represented. The traveller's footprints are washed away, and the next day continues as normal. However, the word "twilight" represents his death, as he never returned from the sea.
