This is a cooperative relationship between both evidences found in research and the process of implementation and can evolve over time. The rigorous process indicated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) involves peer review and evaluation which shows consistent results when improving health outcomes for a population (Scovill, n.d.). I believe this can be translated that data plays a significant role in best practice. It is essential in building evidence to prove or disprove our theories regarding wellness. The implementation of a wellness program in the workforce needs to follow certain steps, which may vary slightly depending on the chosen model. However, as pointed out in the video, What is Best Practice? the outcomes need to address reach, sustainability, and transferability (n.d.). These factors will determine the effectiveness of the program.

There are many components that make up best practice which include the individual, the organization, and environmental factors but I believe the prevailing indicator of success is the company culture. An organization’s culture of wellness can be strongly influenced by management so to maximize results for the individual and the company, the commitment must be mutual (Allen & Hunnicutt, n.d.).

The culture of an organization determines the values and beliefs which are conveyed as important to its members when they are following a standard of behavior (Patnaik, 2011). If this behavior is resistant to change when it comes to health and wellness, what techniques have been proven successful in adopting positive change within this established group? A wellness program is comprised of many working components, but culture is imperative to the sustainability of the movement. The environmental policies and supports should reflect what the employees’ value and expect in order to influence their practices (Aldana et al., 2012). According to Patnaik, there are many typologies of organizational culture, one of which is the tough-guy macho culture, which can breed from a stressful environment (2011). I will be working with police officers which have been indoctrinated with a certain belief on how they are supposed act, which does not always make their self-care a priority. Their openness and preparedness will be paramount in how a wellness program will be received. As in many toolkits we have reviewed regarding worksite wellness, assessment is one of the first steps we must take to determine what the organization needs to be successful. I need to discover the readiness of the individuals, as well as the group, to make broad cultural changes needed to implement mental wellness techniques in a safe and secure environment. I know leadership and peer support will likely play a major role in cultural change but the intricacies of how this will be implemented will also need to be determined.
