There are 3 stages
1) Alarm reaction
Occurs when your body mobilizes its resources to cope with added stress. Bodily processes are slowed down or speeded-up because of adrenaline, noradrenaline, and cortisol.
2) Stage of resistance
Where bodily adjustments to stress stabilize. Body's defenses come into balance and the alarm reaction goes away. You are able to cope with the original stressor, but its resistance to other stressors is lowered.
3) Stage of exhaustion
Body's resources are drained and stress hormones are depleted. Signs set in including, emotion signs of anxiety, irritability, & mental fatigue.
Behavior signs of avoiding responsibilities & relationships, self-destruction, self-neglect, and poor judgement.
Physical signs of worrying about illness, frequent illness, exhaustion, overuse of medicine, and complaints.

I was at the beach with some friends on vacation when one of my older friends drank way too much (keep in mind, many different alcohol types) so she started having a full-blown asthma attack on the beach. The first stage of GAS kicks in. My adrenaline is pumping for sure. The alcohol were triggers & nobody knew what to do. I am the mom of the group and everyone looks at me to figure it out of course. In that moment, and throughout the whole night I was very stressed out. She did not bring an an inhaler nor medication. So I had to drive 30 minutes to a hospital because she could barely breathe. Also, she is fighting with me saying she is fine but obviously she was not. Then stage two kicks in (resistance) I felt less jumpy because we were heading to the hospital to get her help. Two hours go by and we got there at 1 A.M. By the time we leave, stage three sets in and I'm very exhausted. As I lie down to sleep, I feel so much anxiety and worry about my friend that I actually threw up more than once and felt how mentally tired I was. I did not go to sleep until 5-6 A.M.
