— This is kind of like an autobiography of my life (so far).

...Life is unpredictable, and messy. Sometimes life feels like trying to push a fucking statue. But this
struggle is not for nothing. You can't have the good without the bad, and the good feels even better when
you know it doesn't last forever. I allow myself to feel all the ranges of my emotions because doing so
reminds me that feelings are fleeting. Be okay with feelings coming and going — Be okay with people
coming and going — Be okay with energies coming and going, because change in life is constant. Life is:
continuously moving and shifting; a constant tide coming in...

“If there’s anything we can all do together, it's party together” (Kyle Clark). When I think about this work,
I think about how it’s a celebration — because this work represents me and my life, and everything that
I’ve been through, the good and the bad... The beautiful mess that I live. —
...For as long as I can remember I have chosen to dance in the rain — When I was a kid I was
always described as such a “loud, happy child” and people would always tell me to “never lose
this.” I realized young that my ability to “dance in the rain” was a choice, but also a pursuit — a
pursuit of happiness...
Dance truly is the reason why I walk through this life of mine with joy, and with passion. I wanted to use
this process as a way for me to thank dance for all it has done for me and gotten me through to this point.
This work is a tribute to this feeling dance gives me; this feeling is undeniable and it’s contagious, and it
can be shared (and viewed) with other people — which really is the ultimate beauty and true essence of
dance. Because at its core, dance is: an exchange, an exchange of energy, an exchange of experiences, an
exchange of joy. — Dance saves lives, literally — How? ...Because “When we see the infinite
possibilities of ourselves, it makes it a little bit easier to be inside this body.”

There’s no doubt that I've changed a lot and I’ve grown a lot, throughout my twenty-two years living this
life — Remember: being is always becoming; and remember that this multiplicity in us is part of who we
are. We are not defined by the things that have happened to us, but we are by the way we react towards
them. Our reactions to the world tell us a little bit about how we situate ourselves in it. I believe that my
life experiences have a lot to do with the way I interact with space and situation and instruction. With that
being said, experiences are occasions for learning and/or unlearning. And it's our responsibility as human
beings, for each and everyone of us to look inside of ourselves to see if our ways of being in the world
and with each other and ourselves, call for any adjustments.

This work is kind of an archive. An archive of my movement history in dance, but also an archive of my
movement history in life.

I'm thinking about how everything I do is a dance. Putting my outfit on in the morning is a dance, walking
down the sidewalk is a dance; and how my route to any given destination is kind of like choreography. —
I'm thinking about how daily routines and everyday actions are choreography; And I think that if
movement was described like this to non-dancers, more people would understand that pedestrian
movement is dance too. ...I can't help but wonder — if this kind of explanation, or definition of dance,
would lead to a world full of a lot more dancers... and maybe even a world where art is considered
necessary, and inevitable — because it is.
I’ve come to the realization that my pedestrian-self and my dancing-self are not two different people. My
humanity and my artistry both exist inside the same body, meaning the human-in-me and the artist-in-me
have experienced the same life. My pedestrian body is my dancing body. And my experiences being both
of these things in this world have sculpted me into who I am, and who I am still becoming.

When I think about this work I think about how it holds history, my history...

My sound score will consist entirely of house music. House music somehow holds the ability to stretch time and
create this feeling of timelessness. In house music, there are rarely ever lyrics and if there are, it’s very few. House
music focuses solely on the beat. I love house music because you can listen to, and ride one beat for so long and it
just carries you and makes you forget about time entirely...until, it’s two hours later and you realize you’ve been
dancing, chasing the same beat for a while now. In this state, I am able to escape, at least, for a little. This state of
being is when I feel most myself: when I'm in tune with my natural pulse while also simultaneously escaping this
propagandic construct of time. House music is like a constant tide coming in. House music is like waves crashing
over and over again. Kind of like life... house music and life are similar in this way: they both keep going: On and
on..
I like to work in unison; To me unison is very powerful and creates a sense of community and togetherness. I also
want to introduce this idea of witnessing or watching, on stage — within my cast, to symbolize this idea of a
“bystander.” Gosh I fucking hate bystanders!!! — I want to make good use of the Y-Gym space — I want to put an
emphasis on traveling through it. However, I also want a clump formation to be a reoccurring situation, in space,
with my dancers. This clump will symbolize this idea of coming together and being together and sharing
experiences together. This clump formation will be one motif in my work. Another motif throughout the dance will
be a dolphin-dive.
I want the lighting to be representative of the mood or emotion that I feel and connect with, in relation to what part
of the story (my story) is being told on stage. Although my story has its ups and downs, I want this piece to be
overall: uplifting. I’m imagining bright colors like yellow and orange and lavender, and even a bright, bright, bright
white. I was thinking a strobe-light moment(s) could be very effective too. I may also include a red light to represent
the not-so-good times, but it will probably be brief.
When I imagine my dancers in costume, I see them layered with lots of clothing — with lots of different colors and
lots of different patterns. Again, I want them layered with (little-to) no skin showing. As a woman in this world, I
am constantly sexualized, and I don’t want this kind of sexualization of my dancers to occur on stage because of
what they are wearing. This piece is where we can all be free of that; and this type of hate. The styling will not be
masculine or feminine, but more non-binary. Gender stereotypes impact and shape this world in a very negative way.
To me, we are all just vessels — living breathing bodies. Clothing/fashion is just an expression; an expression or
physical representation of human emotions and thoughts. IT'S GIVING: ABSTRACT HIGH-FASHION!
A wide variety of different movement styles will be displayed by a group of versatile and diverse dancers. I want to
see diversity in all aspects of this dance. I want to see unity in all aspects of this dance. And you can’t have one
without the other: unity cannot exist without diversity, and vice versa. I am dedicated to working at advancing
diversity and inclusion at all levels within, not only my rehearsal space, but also in my life. Diversity in this world is
so rare but when you do see it, it is so beautiful. And for me, having nine different people from all very different
walks of life in the same space together, creating together: that’s enough for me.
Like I said, the goal of this work is to showcase that contrast in dance, and in life, is quite beautiful. I think I can
accomplish this by having parts of the dance where different movement styles are all happening at once — Some
dancers will be in sneakers, and some will be in socks, and some dancers will go between both, taking their sneakers
on and off throughout the dance. I want each of the dancers to have a solo moment to showcase their individuality.
This is very important to me. My vision for this work is that there is a constant moving-and-shifting between
movement styles, however, the main movement styles that will be showcased in this work will be hip-hop (with an
emphasis on house-footwork) and contemporary (with an emphasis on floor-work). I think this dance could be
described as having a commercial aesthetic, although this work is less of a performance or showcase, and more of a

a bad thing to keep the masses distracted, right? Keeping us busy at work has got some
political usage...we don't have time to sit around and think. Time is important for civic life,
empathy, and social connection. Working Americans don't feel they have the time to be activists
and do something about the things that really matter to them. But we must. We are citizens, we
are participants. America is not a dictatorship. It is important to take the time to do things that
give us purpose. We need to take time to experience, discover, and just be. In the end, time in
itself isn't a thing; time is constructed.
Let's talk about the social construction of time. Modern-day Americans use clock time versus
sacred time. It is normal to be shaped by the clock rather than shaped by biological time.
Sacred time allows one to feel as if they have enough time whereas clock time possesses a
sense of urgency. Clock time has led most Americans to feel like they don't have enough time to
do all of the things they need and want to do. We need to be able to slow down and reflect. We
need to be able to be peaceful in each moment. Time is all we've got.
