As I read the book Out of My Mind by Sharon M Draper, I wonder what Melody's life would be like without being in the conditions she's in. I wonder what kind of person she would be, and how she would see the world differently. I think about what her classes would be like, how smart she would be, how she would act, and how her lifestyle would change.

2 - Connecting Pg.#98

One connection I made to the book Out of My Mind is how her school works. Melody often gets judged for being "retarded" or different. At our school it's kind of the same because if you don't wear what everyone else wants you too you get judged. People tend to make assumptions about whether someone is smart or if they're "cool". Melody inspires me because of the way she shows everyone how smart she actually is.

The conclusions I drew from this book are that you should never make assumptions about anybody or just look at whats on the outside. Always believe in yourself. Melody got down on herself a lot, but when she practiced and practiced she got a 100% on her quiz and showed everyone just how smart she is. Even though people made fun of her and doubted her, she pushed that aside and worked on being the best she could be.

The part of the book that creates the best picture in my head is where Melody is first receiving her Medi-Talker. "When I saw the UPS truck pulling up in our driveway. She signed for the package and brought it to her house for safe keeping. The huge brown box sits there taped and secure. And it is addressed to me!... we add all of the vocabulary words we've been collecting on our three-by-five-inch flash cards." I could really picture this whole scene in my head as I was reading.

The main character, Melody changed in many ways throughout the book. One major change is that she started out not being able to communicate or barley express her feelings at all. She was using a board with limited letters to point to, to learn at school. Melody was having a hard time showing what was in her brain or how smart she was. In the middle she receives a device that can help her talk to people. By the end she could talk and learn like a regular student, even if she wasn't.

The main theme of the book is to always keep trying and to never give up. Melody had a really difficult time talking and walking and fitting in. She got mad a lot and just blew up from all of the anger inside of her. When Melody started school she was bullied and judged for what she looked like, but Melody kept pushing through and tried her hardest to show everyone her intelligence. Melody worked at any free time she could get during the day and was always trying to learn new things. By the end, all of her hard work payed off even though she didn't get exactly what she wanted.

The events that make up the plot of Out of My Mind are when Melody starts going to classes with "normal" kids. Another event that helped create the plot was when Melody got her Medi-Talker. Her Medi-Talker let her talk to people through a computer. When Melody tries out for the Whiz Kid team, and making the team was a very big and important moment for Melody. The next event that helped fill the plot was when the Whiz Kid team won regionals. Then, when the quiz team had left Melody behind for nationals and did not tell her, Melody stood up for herself and confronted the rest of the team about leaving her.

The authors writing style for the book was very inspirational and very descriptive. She really explained every little detail so you could imagine it. Sharon M Draper really made you feel sympathy or hate for certain characters in the book. This was due to the fact that she really wanted the readers to understand what the characters are feeling at that certain moment; this can help character development over the course of the story.

My opinion for the Book Out of My Mind is very positive. I feel that it really taught me life lessons; to always be happy for what you have, never judge a book by it's cover, help people in need, try and work your hardest and to be kind! Melody's condition and what she has to go through really made me feel like I should be happy for who and what I am, and the life i'm living. Reading this book made me realize that you don't need to be like everybody else to fit in, just be yourself and people will love you for who you are. I love how inspirational and touchy this book was. At points it got very boring or that some parts were unnecessary to the story. But overall I feel that Out of My Mind Is a very touchy, great, and loving book to read.
