The most important aspects of the interview and the collection of data may be what we did not think about. I am especially thinking about how I did not think about tone of voice, timing, laughter, and nonverbal expressions, are required to look at the depth of what was happening while we were interviewing.

In this week's reading, the duoethnography functions as both research and healing. It was important to see that even when both researchers were using their voice, power structures are still embedded into this work. As much as the iterative process needs to be taken into consideration, it also requires humility, trust, and vulnerability. The dialogic nature of duoethnography allows for self-reflection and collective growth, but it also reveals tensions—who speaks, who listens, and whose story is centered. I appreciated how the authors modeled accountability and care, reminding us that critical qualitative research is not just about generating knowledge, but about transforming relationships and ourselves in the process.

As someone who’s part of the one-and-a-half generation, this statement makes me feel seen. Although I was born in Vietnam, I never felt like I was Vietnamese enough to fit in with the youth in Vietnam. I don’t

share the same experiences that they do to fit in. Additionally, I don’t relate to the newcomers as well since they arrive in the U.S. much older than I did. However, I can’t fully say I relate to the Vietnamese Americans who were born here with parents who have lived here longer. It’s almost like being in a constant state of being an outsider within your own community.

“Those acute moments of not enoughness are either so painful, or so vivid, that even then when you do feel enough, we’re still thinking about the last time we didn’t feel enough, or worrying about the next time we’ll be caused to feel not enough again, that we can’t even appreciate those moments when we experience enoughness.” (p. 254) this quote really resonated with me because I think about my workplace and how most people are othered.
