A way of learning about different cultures is to examine how each region and its associated cultures gained their independence. The United States is not the only state to celebrate its freedom! Many countries celebrate their independence, which they fought so hard for; for example, on January 1st - Haiti celebrates its freedom from the French.

The top scientists do not come from America. There are many non-Western scientists, mathematicians, and inventors who helped educate the world. For example, Katherine Johnson also known as the "human computer," was the first African American to work for NASA. Then Mary W. Jackosn was the first female African Amercian engineer. Both these women's work helped bring man to the moon (NASA, 2024). In 1934 and 1951, when they joined NASA, segregation in the United States was still deeply entrenched in society.

Allow students to bring their unique stories and personalize assignments. When students are able to connect with an assignment, they are more likely to care. Some educators find this most difficult with math. An example of how to bring culture into math can be done easily with word problems. For example, you could have students ask their relatives for a family food dish recipe that plays a part in their culture. You could learn how to go from different units using these recipes. Such as cups to grams. Or ounces to lbs.

When students come from an unstable family life, teachers can be quick to assume they may have behavioral issues and be lower academically. This can lower student expectations, and then these students can view themselves as not capable! Right away, teachers need to assess their individual strengths, challenges, and learning styles to then provide differentiated instruction.
