having more people coming

Florida. People like to do

many things on the beach.

They may pick shells up,

or walk on the beach.

Castillo de San Marcos is a 

fort in St Augustine. It was

constructed by the Spanish between

1672-1695. The fort was built from 

coquina. Coquina is a type of shell stone .

Disney World helps Florida's tourism by bringing in many visitors. Disney World brings in at least 48 million visitors every year. Disney World is one of the world's most photographed vacation destinations. There are more than 60,000 cast members throughout the Disney World resort.

The Everglades is internationally 

known for its extraordinary wildlife 

from Florida panthers, to crocodiles, 

manatees, and a huge host 

of birds such as roseate 

spoonbills, egrets, and wood storks. 

The Everglades the only place 

in the world where alligators and 

crocodiles coexist.  Located in South

 Floriada, the Everglades is really a long, 

shallow river that is 80.5 (50 miles) wide 

and more than 161 kilometers (100  miles) long.

Flamingos are usually 42 inches long from the 

tip of the head to the tip of the tail, and are 

as tall as 5 feet. The weigh 5-6 pounds and

have a wingspan of 55 inches. Pairs of males

and females make mud mound nests and 

incubate only one egg for about 30 days. 

The chicks leave the nest after 10 days after

they hatch, and join a group of other chicks 

called a crèche watched by a few adult flamingo.

Flamingos are very social birds. Breeding colonies 

of a few individual flamingos are very rare, while

colonies of tens of thousands of flamingos are 

common. Flock size ranges from 2-340 flamingos 

with an average of 71 flamingos.

Hurricanes are storms that form over warm ocean water and have winds of more than 74 miles per hour. The hurricane season is early summer through fall. One of the most dangerous hurricanes was Hurricane Charley in 2004. It reached miles up to 145 miles per hour. The eye of the hurricane is a place in the middle of the storm and has no rain or wind.

The Manatee is the official marine mammal and has also been called the "Gentle Sea Cow". Manatees are now endangered. On March 11, 1967 federal efforts to protect the manatees began when the Untied States Fish and Wildlife Service listed the manatee as endangered. You can see some manatees at Blue Springs State Park. In Florida you are not allowed to touch manatees.

Spanish explorers planted the first orange tree around St. Augustine Florida between 1513 and 1565. Today, Florida is the second largest producer of oranges in the world. The orange blossom is Florida's state flower, and the fruit is good to eat.

A peninsula is land that is surrounded by water on 3 sides and connected to mainland. Florida is one of the largest peninsulas. Inside of our larger peninsula are a bunch of smaller peninsulas.

The Queen Angelfish is an angelfish commonly found near reefs, around Florida, in the warmer section of the western Atlantic Ocean. The Queen Angelfish is shy around swimmers but is also very curious. The Queen Angelfish gets their royal title from the speckled, blue-ringed black spot on their heads that resembles a crown.

Tallahassee is the capital of Florida. Tallahassee became the capital in 1824. It is home to the Florida State Capital, Supreme Court of Florida, Florida Governor's Mansion, and almost 30 state agency headquarters. The name "Tallahassee" is a Muskoegan indian word for "old fields or old town".

The grand opening of Universal Studios Orlando was on June 7, 1990. It expanded with the opening of Islands of Adventure in 1999. Universal brought in more tourists to the state, and gets over 5.5 million visitors a year.

More than 97 million people visited Florida last year. Visitors come from all over the world. Visitors come to the state for the beaches, theme parks, and arm weather. This boosts Florida's economy. Sometimes visitors love Florida so much that they stay.

Wetlands are areas where water sits on the surface for part or all of the year. Wetlands like marshes, swamps, and estuaries clean the water we drink and provide a healthy habitat for wildlife. The most famous of the Florida wetlands is the Everglades.

Ybor City is now known as Tampa's National Historic Landmark District. Ybor City in the 1880s was a melting pot of immigrants from Spain, Cuba, Germany, and Italy. It was also home to some of the world's most famous cigar factories. It is a major tourist attraction and welcomes millions of visitors each year. Ybor city is known for cigar factories. Many Spanish and Cuban immigrants moved to Ybor City to work in factories.

The Zebra Longwing is the state butterfly of Florida. It has a black and white striped wing pattern to warn off predators. The butterfly's stay together at night in groups of up to 60 to stay safe from predators.

Gators became the state reptile of Florida in 1987.

They are cold-blooded, and often seen sunning

themselves on logs or on banks near water. An adult 

male gator measures up to 15 feet in length, and can 

weigh up to 999 pounds. They are top predators that eat fish, 

amphibians, birds, and mammals. Many gators live

in the Everglades. Gators are hunted mostly for their skins, 

but they are also hunted for meat. American gators live 

to about 50 years in the wild. Gators have long snouts with 

upward facing nostrils at the end. This lets them breathe 

while the rest of their body is underwater.

An immigrant is a a person who comes to live forever in a different country.Immigration has played a major role in the growth of Florida's population. Florida is one of the top 10 states with the fastest-growing immigrant population. Immigrants share their cultures and traditions with others. Many immigrants open businesses and serve as community leaders. Immigrants bring different food, traditions, and many more things.

Jacksonville has the most land and the highest population of any single city in Florida. This area was originally inhabited by the Timucua people, and then became the site of the French colony of Fort Caroline. Jacksonville is home to a Navy Ship Base that has the 3rd largest fleet in the U.S.

The Kennedy Space Center is a part of N.A.S.A, which stands for National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Kennedy Space Center is located on Merritt Island. The program was started by President John F. Kennedy on July 29, 1958. Later the program was ended by President Obama in July 21,2011. The space program is over, but you can go visit The Space Center to this day.

Lake Okeechobee, locally referred to as "The Lake", "Florida's Inland Sea", or "The Big O", is the largest freshwater lake in the state of Florida. It is also noted for its great fishing and importance to the Everglades. Lake Okeechobee is 35.73 miles long and 28.96 miles wide

The National Wildlife Refuge is located on Merritt Island. This refuge contains of 500 different varieties of endangered birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. This refuge is 140,000 acres of land, water,and marshes.

Reefs are made up of lines of coral or rocks. More than 200 kinds of tropical fish lie in and around reefs. The Florida Reef is the only living coral barrier reef in the continental U.S. It is the 3rd largest reef system in the world. Reefs come in many different shapes in sizes. Tourists come and dive in the ocean to see reefs.

St. Augustine is a city that has been around for 450 years. When you go you can see Fort Castillo De San Marcos and the Oldest School House. To this day St. Augustine and all its landmarks are still here. St.Augustine is our nations oldest city. Tourists come to St. Augustine to see all the stuff such as old schools.

The xanthopastis imais moth's wingspan is39-45 mm. Adults have rosy-pink and black forewings, spotted with orange along the wing veins. The hindwings are gray. The xanthopastis imais moth is also known as the spanish moth. You can fid the xanthopastis imais moth petty much anywhere in Florida.
