1. Community Walkthrough and Landscape Interventions: Photos

Photos of the site and surroundings highlight potential areas for intervention. This photo shows the entrance, which is open to the public. However, you must ask for permission and declare your request, especially if you’re a local City of Orange resident.

My concern is, if I weren’t a Cal Poly Pomona Landscape Architecture student, a City of Orange resident, and a smooth talker, would I have really had access to this Public Community Garden? How public and community-friendly is it, really?

Orange Community Garden Location

Upon further investigation into the City of Orange Community Garden, I found that residents of the city can apply to join the waitlist for a small plot to grow food for themselves and their families. The location offers easy access and has available parking nearby and around the site.

I am now planning to apply for a plot to curate and grow my own food. I also hope to plant native Californian food plants, shrubs, and vegetables.

Key Stakeholders of Orange Community Garden- Include: the Fire Dept.

Key stakeholders of the Orange Community Garden include the Orange Fire Department. This raises a few preliminary questions for me: Do they have a plot, and do they grow healthy, organic food for the fire station? If they do, I would love to interview them to learn more about their contributions to the community garden.

If not, I wonder why that is, as I believe involving local government agencies could foster positive community engagement and collaboration. I could even go farther to suggest their be an opening made from the garden to the station. It might help improve the mental health of the workers at the station to impact them in a positive way.

Evaluation of Stakeholder Values. The City of Orange values safety as well as protecting itself from lawsuit.

Reflecting on the values and concerns observed during my walkthrough, public safety was evident at the location. For instance, while I could walk around the Community Garden, I couldn’t enter the gated area until I emailed the liaison, submitted a signed waiver, and received permission. Once granted access, I will be able to interview the onsite gardener.
