The Family Connection Program is a camp held during the summer months designed to address the needs of children entering kindergarten at the Emanuel Benjamin Oliver Elementary School.

The program creates "a welcoming, engaging, experiential learning environment which seeks to show young children how school and learning can be fun. (Program Brochure, 2014)" The learning activities are child-led and offer student choice.

Field trips, outdoor activities and movement are embedded within the curricula.

With this evaluation, I am concerned about the facilitation of the Parent Focus Group Interview. There are parents who speak Haitian Creole and Spanish and I will need to have translators for the session. Often when information is transferred out of language the essence is lost.

ANALYSIS STRATEGIES: Through the use of the existing, archival program files, I will be able to ascertain the quantitative data as needed to respond to question 1. For questions 2-5, content analysis from interview notes will provide results to the parent responses and survey results from the teacher surveys. Further, the focus group will fulfill the need of gathering information from parents who do not write in the native language or English. For questions 3-5, the results of the focus group (for parents) and teacher surveys will provide the necessary quantitative and qualitative data in an inexpensive, anonymous and unobtrusive manner.

In the Virgin Islands, according to the most recent Kids Count Data Book report, it was revealed that 53% of 5 year olds lacked expected age-level skills for successful kindergarten learning. As such, there is a clear need for Pre-K programs in the territory.
