When My Home Became the New World

When I was a child, my family lived in relative peace. There were sometimes wars with other tribes, but it was nothing like after Christopher Columbus arrived on our shores, mistakenly believing he was in what he called, the "Far East." I have heard that Mr. Columbus is celebrated by some people for "discovering" my home, when millions of people, including my family, lived here before he showed up, thank you very much. And to make it even worse, Mr. Columbus never admitted in his entire life that he had "discovered" someplace new! He went to his grave calling us the "Far East" and never acknowledging that the Americas are a separate continent from Asia. Mr. Columbus called us "indios" because the man was a poor navigator and lost his way while sailing across the ocean from Spain.
Mr. Columbus arrived on the shores of my ancestral land -- the eastern coast of Central America -- in 1504. He was a violent and cruel man. He forced my family and friends to be slaves, including me, even though I was only 12-years-old when he arrived. He forced my entire village to convert to his religion, Christianity, or be tortured and killed. We had our own religion, and secretly I still believe in my own people's gods, but of course I agreed to say all the words Mr. Columbus demanded we repeat to show we believed in his god. Mr. Columbus used violence and the benefit of "Old World" diseases, which made us sick and weak and sometimes die, to become Governor of our land. He forced us to work for free so he could make money. He captured people from my village and other villages and put them on ships to Spain to be sold as slaves. We cried and begged him not to take our friends and family, but he ignored our pleas. My two little brothers were taken away on a ship to Spain to be sold as slaves and I don't think I will ever get to see them again.
As Governor, Mr. Columbus became famous for his cruelty. If any of the "indios" complained about slavery, he not only murdered them, but also put their bodies on display as a warning to others to never disobey. Eventually, somebody told the king and queen of Spain about how cruel and violent Mr. Columbus was to us. One day, out of the blue, a group of people sent by the king and queen of Spain arrested Mr. Columbus and deported him back to Spain. How he kicked and screamed! One would think he was being kidnapped into slavery versus arrested and sent home because he was a bad man and a bad ruler. Unfortunately, Mr. Columbus was arrested too late to stop all the damage to my friends and family and homeland. My younger brothers were already gone and so many of my friends and family had died because of slavery and disease. Now, I am an old woman, and no good to anyone as a slave because I am too weak to search for gold or do other forced labor. So, I sit on the beach, and stare out at the ocean, wondering how anything so beautiful could carry an evil like Mr. Columbus to my homeland. I am a sad, old woman. My only hope is that one day the world knows the truth and stops celebrating the man who ruined my life.
