First, I can see different groups of people, like farmers, settlers, and an angel. The angel is holding a book, possibly the Bible, and a wire that looks like a telephone line. I also see many buffalo, horses, a deer, a bear, and two cows. Towards the upper right hand corner of the picture, I can see a body of water with boats and a bridge. In the background of the image I see a large mountain and pioneers walking near it. I can also see Native Americans on horses looking at something in the distance. In the right side of the image I see a cabin home and a train behind it. Left of that, I see a man in a buggy getting pulled by horses. I think that "American Progress" is giving the message that the angle is guiding the way to a new life. It looks like she is carrying the telephone line in a direction towards the past giving the idea that new things will be happening or created here. In this image the older times are more in the left side while the right side is the "today" or the present. I think the message of the picture is showing that settlers are moving to new land, and the angel showing that they are a united group that should all stay together. I also see many animals like horses and buffalo. The people are either riding the horses or they are pulling carriages with settlers in them, or their items. The buffalo look like they are also pulling a carriage but the others aren't doing anything. Next, I see a river with boats. The boats are probably carrying the settlers supplies. Lastly, I see a book and a line that runs along the river. She is carrying a brown book with rope in her hand as though constructing the land lines. She is showing moving on and expanding to new land within this artwork. Behind her I see farmers, buffalo, wagons, trains, and people of all sorts are leaving to new lands. I also see a small river flowing. The effect of the filter on this image seems angelic but at the same time erie possibly for the journey ahead being sad but hopeful of better life.
